C185 Down, Williams Lake, 1 Fatality

Post by 5400AirportRdSouth »

According to the Vancouver Sun -

One person was killed in a float plane crash Saturday in Williams Lake.

A lone pilot launched the plane from Williams Lake around 1:40 p.m. and was expected back at 5 p.m., said RCMP spokeswoman Const. Lesley Smith.

Police say an extensive search found an 84-year-old Williams Lake man. His name has not been released. An experienced pilot, he crashed into a hillside nine kilometres northwest of Williams Lake while piloting a Cessna 185. He was the only man aboard.

Search and Rescue was notified of the absence shortly before 10 p.m., deployed from Comox and spotted the downed plane near the Fraser River northwest of Williams Lake before dark.

It is unclear what caused the crash. The investigation is ongoing and has been turned over to the B.C. Coroner’s Service.

The pilot’s identity is expected to be released after next-of-kin notification.

The airplane was for sale and the story seems to be that Mr. Exton was taking it up to some lake to a prospective buyer. He was going to be taking video of the instrument panel on the way to put on some website. The weather was not good as well.

If memory serves me correctly ,one of the local papers had initially reported that the weather at the time of the crash wasn't very good in the area.
