"Jazz 8588, a de Havilland DHC-8-402 (C-GGNF) landed on runway 27 at Saskatoon, SK, on a flight from Calgary, AB. The aircraft touched down about 1000 feet down the runway, and slowed to taxi speed. The crew planned to exit onto taxiway "A" at the end of the runway. On reaching the turnoff, the aircraft did not respond to steering or braking inputs and departed the end of the runway at about 20 kts. The aircraft came to rest 50 feet past the end of the runway in about 1.5 feet of snow. There were no injuries and there was no damage to the airport facilities. The crew advised ATC, completed shutdown checks and briefed the passengers. ARFF responded and TSB was notified. Airport crews cleared snow from around the aircraft and the passengers were taken by bus to the terminal. The aircraft was towed to the ramp for inspection and no damage was found. ATIS information indicated a CRFI of .52 for runway 27 at the time of the aircraft's initial approach. An area of ice with poor braking action was noted at the end of runway 27 in the vicinity of the turnoff onto taxiway "A"."

Good lesson on how there can be slippery spots anywhere but perhaps more often at the end of a runway. 20 knots could be a bit fast for taxi speed in some situations. Sometimes it seems like the guys doing lots of flights have a tendency to taxi faster which can be fine depending on the circumstances.

I had an accident at the airport many years back due to black ice.....when I was a rampie on a vehicle. It was a good lesson learned with some damage to a garage door. A little snow over top and it might not really be visible. These guys did have one thing available that I didn't have at the time....reverse thrust.

Whats the point of your smart a** remark here? You don't know the situation, maybe atc adviced them to expedite off the rwy (without commenting on the surface condition leading up to taxiway)as their was a medevac flight behind them. In my opinion a crfi of.52 is pretty good and i wouldnt expect to slide off the runway at 20 knots. I think there is more to the story...

Even if there is more to this particular story, it is a good reinforcement as a general rule without specifying any particular incident that just because a runway condition report is good, it does not guarantee that all of the runway is good. I believe that the CRFI is an average measurement. Therefore, there may be some slippery spots on a runway with .52 CRFI. As well, under precipitation conditions, the CRFI should only be considered valid at time of measurement.

Runway length appears to be irrelevant here and this should be thought of as a taxiing incident which just happened to involve taxiing on a runway.

I don't know what Rudy was getting at by stating the runway length either. My first thought though was that if the runway had been just 4000 or 5000', they likely wouldn't have got caught as they appear to have, as there would have been less reason or temptation to maintain a relatively higher speed taxi.

The runway could have been 15000 Feet and not made a difference here...crew went to turn with tiller, no grip, no turn...simple as that ,I'm sure if the crew knew the surface was that slick they would have used props, brakes and tiller and slowed to a crawl....shit happens.
