It would be closer to 3 years right now on the ramp. 40 pilots in waiting right now... There are pilots in waiting in accounting, sms, dispatch, ramp, FAs, scheds, etc. They PPC about 10 ground guys per year and then you add the attrition (guys in front of you who can't survive YZF, FOs upgrading or leaving for 705 companies, etc) it can get a little bit faster but as it is right now, 3 years is a good estimate.

Yellowknife is an awesome town, the people you work with are amazing and you will make connections that will help you build your career but I wouldn't suggest to a friend to come work here today. There are much better ramp jobs around at the moment.

Why would anybody spend 30K on a licence and spend 2-3 years working on a ramp? ANYWHERE? Okay, maybe Maui. Shakes head.
I just don't understand these people. And, I really don't want to.

Doc- The answer to who WANTS to?
Nobody.

Everyone makes their own decisions in this climate, but the problem is the lack of other options. I would say if you eliminate Instructing, only about 20% of the aviation "first job" openings are flying (or even mostly flying) jobs.
The vast majority of entry float jobs are dockhands for the first summer- might get 20 hours if lucky to prime you for insurance the following season.

That being said.... one 5 month season followed by a Winter doing whatever, is a hell of a lot less than 3 years without touching a plane. That's just ridiculous. For that timeline (and finances included) I'd rather buy my own Apache or risk flying stagnant aircraft around the club that need flight time. (There ya go Col... someone agrees with you.)

BTW.... 30k? :) Ohhhh how things have changed. I wouldn't have had to sell anywhere near as many drugs to schoolchildren if that was the case.

I could never see any problem working the ramp, dispatching etc as long as you were getting flying too. That means virtually daily, you are actively getting checked out or you are getting screwed.
But 3 years!? Bend over Jackson, here comes some more training!

Didn't Tindi just lay off a bunch of wannabes? So you mean work for 1-2 years then get laid off?

This is what I never understood about working the ramp. If you did get laid off after two years... those two years were essentially wasted. Yes you may have more contacts now and some experience around commercial aircraft... but you had that at the 6 month mark...

There have been plenty of people - just
do a quick search here - that have been
badly burned by "paying their dues" for
years on the ramp, then not getting to fly.

Odd how people have to prove their
loyalty to the company, yet the company
doesn't have to be loyal to the employees.

Working the ramp is a heluva gamble.
