Did you receive training? If not, then what bond could they possibly enforce?

No. The offer would have the bond included (usually), so if you didn't sign back the offer or the bond, you're good.

Long answer: Have you already paid money? You may have to fight to get it back and that would be a bit tricky. You would be telling your ex-employer that you are repudiating the contract. You would then have to convince them (or a judge) a number of things:
a) that although you breached the contract, the company has suffered no damages;
b) that the company was unjustly enriched as they have your money, but had no costs;
c) Alternatively, a court could order a rescission of the contract if there are grounds to do so.

That's actually a really good point. If you've paid into your training already, it may be tough to get that back without legal action.

Most places have a course setup prior to interview, as long as he didn't sign back the job offer or give them money, he should be alright financially. Reputation, depending on how professionally he handled, it is questionable.

Based on the posted question, it’s implied that this pilot accepted the job and had a training date, at some point prior to commencing the training changed their mind.

He turned down the job offer. Not sure how that would be considered unprofessional.

You'd be surprised what I've seen with guys lying in job interviews, delaying on the offer sign back and dodging communication, hoping for something else they had carpet bombed with their resume and interviewed for.

There is always a way to do everything unprofessionally, as being selfish is generally seen that way.

Absolutely not saying this was his case, but clearly he had another option he was more excited about or perhaps decided not to leave his former employer.

There is still a strong old mentality in Canadian Aviation that will have to change as conditions evolve. The day of dicking pilots around, treating them poorly and paying peanuts will have to come to an end, and it will if pilots enforce it and nobody takes crappy jobs (even the low timers)

Thanks to all off you for your input. Just to clarify...no bond amount was signed for. There was no other offer of employment from a different employer. They changed the conditions of employment, so the decision to decline the position was made. End result is that I'm still looking.
