Where do FSS hires first get placed? Where were you first placed?
Just wanting to get a general feel of where people are being posted? Anyone up in Nunavut?
Re: Where do FSS hires first get placed? Where were you first placed?
Not keen to give out too much details but here are the three general areas my class was posted.
1. Northern prairies
2. Northern BC
3. South BC interior
Where you go is entirely dependant on who needs staff at the time you train. There's nothing you can really do to effect it so best not to worry about it. General rule of thumb is that if you couldn't handle living in an extremely remote community for 2-5 years, don't join.
The only guarantee is you will not be posted to any of the seniority bid stations. Entire east coast, southern coastal BC, and basically all major cities. If you are the one in a million to get posted to one of those as an initial site, it would be a temp (1-2 year) post, and/or you'd be reposted when someone bid to that location.
Also keep in mind that your contract states the company can move you as much as they want, to wherever they want, for the first 7 years of your career.
Any questions feel free to PM.

Does Navcanada provide housing? How does someone go about just moving to somewhere that remote?
Re: Where do FSS hires first get placed? Where were you first placed?
They will move you, your household goods, immediate family, and one vehicle to your posting. They provide temporary accommodation in a hotel, money for meals, and a rental car for you while you wait for your things. Some sites offer an isolated post allowance to help offset the higher cost of living.
For some of the most extremely remote and isolated locations, they provide housing for you. I think this is the case for rankin inlet, Norman wells, inuvik, Iqaluit, and the northern Quebec locations.
