C 206 on EDO 3430 3500lbs vs 3800 lbs max. gross

Post by Scandinaviansky »

Hi!

We operate a C 206 G modell with EDO 3430 which gives a max. gross weight of 3500lbs and a 206 F modell and same floats with a Bonaire 550 conversion and wing extensions which has a max. gross weight of 3800lbs. According Bonaire the engine conversion does not give the the gw increase. I always thought it is the combination of wing extension and 550 conversion. Does anybody know what gives the gw increase from 3500-3800 lbs?

Also the aircraft float supplement gives only performance charts for 3500 lbs. Does anybody know where to get the take off performance data for 3800lbs max. gw?

Thanks a lot!

Daniel

I have minimal experience with 206s but Flint tip tanks increased the MTOW to 3800 lbs, although I am pretty certain the MLW remained at 3600 lbs. The Wip tips (Wing-X STC for 206s bought by Wip) does not grant a MTOW increase. I have never dealt with it, but have heard about an STC from Aeroacoustics that increases the MLW to 3800 lbs - but it sounds like the MTOW increase needs to come from a different STC.

No need to have a different engine than the 520 to get the 3800lbs.

Thanks. So the Flint Tip tanks give the 3800lbs gw increase. But we also have a 206 F with Wip 3450 amphib floats, also with 3800lbs. Is it the floats that give that gw increase, because this plane has no Wing tip tanks.

Hmmm.... a 520 powered Cessna 206 on floats with a gross weight of 3800 lbs! That must be a water lover!

It as a 550 engine:)

Also normal max. gross weight is 3600 lbs on wheel Cessna but on EDO only 3500 lbs. Why? Boyancy?

I've never heard of a 206 with 3800# gross that didn't have wing extensions (I think ART also goes to 3800).
With wing extensions at 3800lbs it performs about as well as at 3600lbs without.

Any restrictions weight wise on water would be related to the maximum carrying capacity of the floats.
I remember 1.78 of the maximum buoyancy of both floats but it has been a very long time since I was asked about that so my memory could be at fault.

I am not certain how it all works exactly (ie read the STC) but Wipaire's website says 3450s give 206s a 3792 lb gross weight. In their blurb about their 550 conversion it also says the 550 conversion with 3450s gives most F&G models a 200 lb increase in gross weight - that would give you 3800 lbs if they are start counting from 3600lbs.

ART aka Wing-X specifies on their website that the 206 tips do not give a gross weight increase to any model of 206. I believe Wip bought the 206 STC and that is what they market as Wip Tips.

The lower gross weight on floats for the stock 206 was a result of the fact that the aircraft could not meet the certification minimum climb rate requirement at any weight above 3500. This will be of absolutely no surprise to anyone who has ever flown a stock 206 on floats.

I have not flown a 206 in any configuration, once I crunched the numbers between a 185 & 206 on floats over 35 years ago I went with the 185 & have been very happy with it’s performance.
My comments were more related to the buoyancy of the floats with relation to their load carrying capabilities.
