2870 Floats

Post by sheephunter »

Guys, I need some help. Anyone know of a set of 2870's for sale with 180 rigging. I'm in Ontario, so the closer the better. Thanks for your help. I know there are lots around that don't even know they're for sale.

Not really. The 2700 & 2705's are perfect for the 180. Same float as the 2870 but with wheels stuck in them. Obviuosly the electric motors in the 2700's are the glitch while the 2705's are hydraulic. (the conversion is where I'm heading) since whip & aerocet have set the bar a little high for me. If not for that you'd almost never here from me. I basically have to loose one passenger. But hey, I don't have any back seats anyway and not that many friends. Not that bad with the wing-x, sportsman and vg's. Works OK. Not great, just OK off water, but will be great on straight floats. Just happens where I am operating it is just so much more convenient to operate out of where the fuel is and the supplies are. Saves a lot of time and wear and tear on trucks and boot leather hiking into town when you show up unexpectedly. Travelling long distance is amazingly easy having both options and sometimes a logistic nightmare being stuck to just float bases. The 2870 will hopefully be a quick fix for the season. Maybe I'll get used of them, but I doubt it. Thanks to all the others that have pm'd with great leads.

I've got the 180 fittings, but the floats are occupied  . Let me know if you need them.

Even better, ... I have a friend with a pair of 2960s, missing the porkchops but we can get those. Very negociable, ... Ontario, decent, but not like new condition. Very servicable. PM if interested.

Hornblower Thanks, I'll keep it in mind but that extra 17" or whatever it is on the 2960's as opposed to the 2870's just makes it tough on the old 180's with the O-470. I have had guys tell me that once you get onto them they're OK and then others tell me they will make a fool of you. I can do that most of the time without help. That being said, if I am stuck and the price is right and they are located close enough... I may consider them. Thanks

Checked with my cousin. He'll sell you the whole airplane with the floats, but is unwilling to sell the floats separately. Sorry.. On the bright side, it's got new paint, panel, prop, and interior... :D

My experience was just the opposite. My C180 had the 2870's which certainly worked OK but I flew a friends C 180 with 2960's a few times and thought it was easlier to handle and more stable on the water. Just one opinion though I wonder what others think ?

Big Pistons, what year were those 180's. I am getting really mixed reports on this. Anyone else with comments as there seem to be quite a few more 2960's available locally than 2870's.

I've flown 180s and 185s with CAPs, EDO 2870s, EDO 2960s and PeeKays (ugh). I like the 2960s best. That being said I have never flown an old (pre '60) 180 on 2960's, and they are a lighter, better performing AC (slower though). I find it hard to believe that the 2960s wouldn't work well though.

I know there are a few STCs floating around (pun not intended), that will convert 2870s to 2960s, so maybe that is why you can't find too many pairs of the former.

I prefer the 2870s. The 2960s work just as well but it's a lot easier to find the sweet spot on the 2870s when you need to get off the water in a hurry in a short lake. I imagine that an experienced 2960 driver would have no problem but if you're not in exactly the right attitude for your weight and the water conditions and you try to "horse" the 2960s off, it's like hitting the brakes when those tails dig in! 2870s are just a bit easier to get right in a hurry. The 2870s are lighter by a few pounds but the 2960s allow for higher gross to offset that.

The 2960s are great for beaching - you can usually get to the sand and back with dry shoes!

I have flown both sets on the C-180.On the water if you are heavy the 2960's I like better for the extra floatation, and never had a problem taking off.Just don't try and rush the take off by pulling back or you dig the heels in and lenghthen the take off roll. The 2870'3 are a little under floated if you are operating in anytype of wind at gross(worse if you have the kenmore upgross),on the other hand you can pull the airplane into the air sooner.

I was just looking at the specs of 180's to see if design had anything to do with the diffence of reported performance of one float over the other but it seems that they are all from start to finish quite close. I know close is horseshoes, but I thought if one happened to be quite a bit longer maybe that was it. I am thanking everyone for their help but now am getting a little confused as to which I am more concerned because in most cases I am working with good loads and long lakes with usually wind, but then on occassion I am into small lakes but light... but with my amphibs, so is performance on the 2960's still going to be as good or better than the 2700's? Can you roll the 2960's or do you just have to wait for it to fly? Wish I could try them side by side before I had to make a decision.

My 180 was a 1957 C180A, the one with the 2960's was a 1975 H model.
