I have seen anywhere form 450/hr to 650/hr depends on the operator I guess.

ZMT-I believe you're thinking hourly rates as opposed to operating costs; the price that customers pay as opposed to the cost to the operator to run the machine. Those figures would be rather high operating costs.

Sorry Bushav8er, had them scribbled down somewhere, but can't find the scrap of paper. If I come across it I'll let you know.

BC coastal region charters charge out at $800-1000/hr +GST for a DHC-2.

Operating costs are not set in stone as most operators factor in other fixed overheads to the cost of operation and obviously such things as insurance rates differ from operator to operator. Do you have hull coverage? Who is flying the machine? running it off mix'd gas or pure avgas? is that gas from bulk or are you buying retail? Is this a cream puff 500k machine or a bush beater 200k machine? are there lease payments/bank payments being made? or is the aircraft owned outright? I can go on...but you get the picture.

As you can see there are endless potential factors at play for the operating costs for the machine...good luck nailing down a number.

DHC-2 MK I "DOC" Direct Operating Cost

Consumables
Fuel: (23 Gal) $184.00
Oil: (2QT) $15.00
Misc: (Pledge, H-5606, LPS-2, Barf Bags etc) $4.00
$203 / HR

Rotables
Engine Overhaul: 45k + 15% = $51,750.00
Prop O/H (Hamilton Std 2D): 11K + 15% = $12,650.00
$64400.00 / 1600HR TBO = $40.25 / HR

Maint (based on a 250 HR season)
Annual: 8K + 10% = $8800.00
Change-over and float maint.: 2.5K
100HR insp.: $1300.00 X 2.5 = $3250.00
$14550.00 / 250HRs = $58.20 / HR

Total DOC: $301.45 / HR

I am of course negating many factors here but normally the above is how Operating Costs are factored. I might be overlooking things too; this is just off the top of my head and the figures are not researched at all.

Lease rates, insurance, financing, and pilot's wages are all highly variable between operators and are not factors for the purposes of determining DOC.

Be interested to see what others come up with, using only the above parameters.

No worries L.F.

I am actually the first of three generations in my family who hasn't had to worry about the economics of running a DHC-2.

I do fly too, though just PPL, and I have a little left seat time on DHC-2, and probably hundreds of hours riding around in them as a kid; usually in the way-back, burried under a heap of gear, moose quarters or helicopter parts trying to see out that 10" crazed lexan porthole.

So, I do have some inate affinity for all things 'Beaver and what it might take to run one.

Make my living pulling wrenches though now and the only beavs' I play with are purely for recreation.

No offence taken. Now I'm going to pack my hand-basket and 'eff off

Cheers,

What would be the formula to determine what you would charge per mile instead of a per hour basis?

Any info would be appreciated

Insurance
Pilot
Fuel/Oil
Engine TBO
Prop TBO
=$395.00 per hour
$395.00 X 3 = $1185.00 per hour Charter Rate
$1185.00 / MPH 110 = $10.70 per mile

I used a fuel rate of $1.70 liter
The variables are pilot rates/ Insuranance costs/ hours flown annually.

2 quarts is a good number to bank on but a fresh engine uses much less in my experience. When we did time trials on the PZL Otter one plane was using 2.5 gallons per hour by the end

I had an AME tell me once that those PZL otters loved their oil, but I had no idea it could really be that high. Don't tell the environmentalists.....

It's been a long time, but I believe we had 2300 hours on the engine. It also took 30 minutes of belly scrubbing after each return to base to get rid of the 3 foot wide black belly stripe...
