What To Do In The Winter?

Post by FloatGuy »

Hey all
This summer I'm going to be starting my career as a potential float driver in NWO. However one thing that's making me hesitant is what I'm going to do come Oct. I would like to keep flying and continue to build time, while being able to come back in the following spring to work for the same company I'll be working for this summer. What do you guys do in the winter? Drink beer all day on EI? What do you's do for income?
Any ideas or comments are appreciated

You're in luck....if you wanna bust your ass, the oil drilling season is opposite the float flying one. Make more in a week as a roughneck than you will in a month as a dockhand/junior float driver. Failing that, there's always swinging a hammer. I did stints at both until I found year round bush work. Either way you're probably gonna have to head to Alberta  .

It may be a little tougher starting out with little experience, but places in Northern ontario seem to be busy as of late with exploration. Mostly work with turbine swines and beavers though there may be the odd Cessna on wheel skis around.

Collect UI and restore antique car engines for wealthy collectors.

Stretched head studs and corrosion caused 40+ out of 62 studs to break off attempting to remove them.

Will probably fly part-time this summer

Geodoc, have you got more you can post? Your talents are wasted in an airplane!

Love this thread - really interesting to see what you guys can do, both in the air and not. I used to spend my off-season flying floats on the coast and going to school. One of my friends had a boat he kept in the Caribbean just out of the storm track and he migrated there in the Fall.

LOL Couger, in order to travel by 5th wheel, I have to stock it with cat food myself.

No offense, but you are asking other people, what to do, through your winters...work wise.

How old are you? Have you ever worked before?

Sorry for being rude, I just don't understand threads like this...

He's probably got some other skills/jobs to fall back on, just curious as to what everyone else gets upto..

Ive done the construction/heavy equipment thing, I've driven, I've worked countless peon jobs, I've flown and sometimes I just take pictures, write some stories for my book and plan world domination outside of the flying world...

None taken, I'm a early 20 year old "250 Hr. young'n" just finishing up at an Ontario college. I've gotten some job offers flying floats, however I'm not sure what everyone who's in the float driving business does for the winter to: 1) maintain income 2) continue to build flying experience and 3) what they do for fun.
I was looking for some ideas before I took the plunge and committed myself to flying floats.
