Re: Otter SUV in Webequie
What's the meaning of SUV in the title?
Flying an aircraft and building a guitar are two things that are easy to do bad and difficult to do right

I've got a few hours clattering around in that thing when it was 1000HP PZL powered.

Re: Otter SUV in Webequie
That must have taken some doing. The propeller impacted the runway surface on arrival.

It must have taken some doing?
Obviously you have not taken one of those super 50 hr bush courses...No biggie for one of them to accomplish this feat.
Seriously, it is sad to see one of the good old ones get nicked up.

Land with the parking brake on sometime and see what happens.

You know, in over 40 years of flying, I have never tried that in any plane. I cant recall anyone else with half a brain trying it either. Why would you? And why would you suggest it?
Is that something they teach in the 50 hour bush course? What difference does the parking brake being on make if you are on floats? Can you even put the parking brake on if you are on floats? And do float planes actually park, or do they dock?
Maybe they should have docking brakes.

On skis, step off the lower step onto the wheel without the parking brake on and see what happens.

Actually, I have too, (stepped onto the wheel) Learned to do the wheelie hop as we did not like the parking brakes left on in cold weather...but..did you land with them on? That is what the other poster spoke of..landing with the parking brakes on. And , quite seriously, I cant see any rationale for doing that, and I can surmise some serious pitch issues on a tailwheel aircraft.

Re: Otter SUV in Webequie
Nope. Never done it myself, but we did have one of our pilots do it. Stood on it's nose then the tail coming down broke it's back.
P.S WTF was that whole rant about floatplane brakes at the dock all about? We did also have a pilot who landed the Caravan on Amphibs with the parking brake on and blew all 4 mains. (They have parking brakes for land parking, not for parking on docks).
If anyone out there was dumb enough to think that I was actually suggesting that you try landing with your parking brake on. Please disregard.

Re: Otter SUV in Webequie
Actually, I did not think you were suggesting that at all. Just seemed like a rather odd comment..I find it hard to believe someone can take off with the parking brakes on, though I have never tried that either. But that would mean that they put the parking brake on in flight......and then forgot about it...I think your comments towards dumb people might be better directed. Would you have the CADORS reference numbers or the approximate dates, as I would be very interested to read the reports.

Re: Otter SUV in Webequie
When you land the otter with full skis down ON THE SNOW,you put the parking brake on to keep the wheel from turning when you step on it to get out. Then you take off and pump the skis up and forget about the parking brake being on and go to land on a runway. It is good pratice to never put full skis down on the snow, make sure to leave a bit of wheel down so you don't have to put the parking brake on and avoid this from happening.

Having partial wheels down when landing on snow also has the added benefit of helping to absorb the shock of uneven hard snow surfaces. It is good pratice to never put full skis down on the snow, make sure to leave a bit of wheel down so you don't have to put the parking brake on and avoid this from happening.
The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

Re: Otter SUV in Webequie
have heard of incedences where guys park on ice with partial wheel/ski using the parking brake over night then forgetting about it once airborne and heading to a rwy. But partial is the best way to do most of the flying in snow
