Hey folks,

Will probably fly a Cessna 180 on floats from the Ottawa area to Yellowknife sometime in July. Any recommendations for route? float base? refuelling, etc...

Any of you done it before or somewhere close enough?

Cheers

Tazin

Bring as many jerry cans as you can carry. Limited float operations these days. I highly recommend you contact bush operators ahead of time. I have ferried a float plane many years ago from Northern Ontario to Alaska. It was a little difficult back then.

Piece of Cake to yellowknife. As to fuel , it depends on what model of the 180 you are flying. some of the older ones only held 50 USG..Newer, skywagon versions ..up to 80, and with flint tips, even more...check your pms

As is anywhere, any route in northern Canada and not necessarily that far north... fuel is a nightmare especially if you are totin' short tanks. Did, CYQA - Fort Simpson a bunch of times on wheels and Watson Lake to CYQA once on floats in '05. Across Ontario won't be too bad like Ottawa - Subury or Cochrane - Pickle Lake or Red Lake - The Pas - La Ronge - High Level. Mogas STC will be your friend as will a bunch of red buckets in the back. My 180 has 27.5 each side plus a 19 gal.aux tank but still not what I'd like for these long hauls. Way more comfortable in my opinion over that country with floats under you than wheels but less options for fuel. Amphibs. are in. Have fun, it's a great flight.

If you where truly flying across the country, you would end up in beautiful BC. Now that, according to some on here, would be a challenge.

July has to be the best time to fly across Canada, nothing to worry about except the odd Forest Fire.

Buffalo Narrows, SK has fuel. Talk to Barry @ Voyage Air or Courtesy. Barry has a dock.
Fort Smith, NT might have fuel. Talk to Northwestern Air Lease.

This might be too late for you. Hopefully it helps.
