External loads...canoes...any photos?
Hello all...didn't want to hijack the two ongoing threads with this request.
For my own use, as reference for my artwork , I'm hoping to find photos of various external loads on various aircraft...
in particular though, canoes on Norsemans, Beavers or the early Fairchilds. I have a pretty good selection of book sources (especially Milberry),
but for what I'm sure was a common practice, there aren't a lot of photos.
Any help or direction would be appreciated...post 'em here for fun or feel free to PM me when you get a chance.

Most guys don't like to post pictures because we don't like Transport to get ahold of them. Probably 50% of the outfits I've worked for had external load paperwork. The other ones just hauled it as it had been done since Orville and Wilbur...
I recently had a buddy get stopped for hauling 16" 2 x 8s on the Caravan float. It works great and you hardly notice any drop in airspeed and zero turbulence. But it's not approved

Helmet Fire, I am more curious about the tape job on the back of that Cessna! Someone blow a window out?

Looks like the least expensive window tint available because they did not have a suitable can of paint.

Had a friend who once picked up some hunters and they convinced him, (a low timer at the time), to strap a large portion of a moose that had been cut up to the outside of the floats. He got airborne, but barely, and after just clearing the trees at the far end of the lake he set it back down on the very next lake about 200 yards away. He left the moose on the floats but asked the hunters to get out. He eventually returned for them after he changed his underwear!!! Sorry I don't remember the A/C type. Far too many years ago now....

Silly question but why do you always see the boat tied to the floats with the aft facing forwarding? Wouldn't drag be reduced with it facing forward?

A friend of mine used to haul boats with the bow forward on an Otter. With the horizontal stab being so high he said there was no noticeable vibration from the turbulence generated by the boat and the plane seemed to fly easier. According to every rule I've seen though, it's always stern forward no matter what kind of aircraft is doing the hauling. I've never seen any engineering reports about it either so safety and stern first for me.

The other question is -- why does every picture show the boat on the left -- we always hauled our external loads on the right side -- unless of course there were 2 boats
-- aircraft always flew better with loads on the right -- ya I know -- so we can see the boat but really does that matter that much -- never bothered me -- I wanted the best performance -- now if the engine turned "backwards" then the left side makes sense --

I've heard it was because the bow of the boat kinda acted like the leading edge of an wing and created lift wanting to create a low pressure on the bottom of the boat and therefore trying to lift it right off the float. Either way stern forward lol.

I never heard of flying stern first or have I ever seen it -- unless of course it was a paddler canoe -- lol -- I had never seen anyone leave ropes tied to their floats when flying -- then again when I was flying floats usually only half the passengers even had a seat and sometimes none -- they sat on their kit on top of a life jacket and usually no seat belts as well -- ah the good old days where men were men and all the dogs were nervous !!!!

Hey BBob -- How did it fly -- flew 2 14 ft boats on a bvr and needed flap to stay in the air --

Some where I have a picture of flying a Seadoo on the floats. That required aileron input. With that load I just rolled the seedoo float off the water first to test it out. That was on straight floats the first time.
