King Air landing gear

Has anyone found a better way to perform the mechanical gear actuator check? Maintenance manual shows a makeshift wire with a dial indicator and not having any luck especially at the retracted end of the test. Any pics or suggestions would be awesome.

If down time isn't an issue then the best way I've found is to remove, clean, inspect, bench test, and re-install. If down time is an issue, having spares that you can swap out is an option. Doing the in situ test and trying to get an accurate reading of the end play is extremely difficult.

Our company bought a kit from actuatorendplay.com designed for that check. One of the guys here tried it and said it worked great! He was a little ticked that the kit arrived after he pulled the actuators tho, says he's pretty sure he could have done it without removing them. We'll see next time and I'll let you know.

Had a chance to use that actuator kit the other day on a 90. It worked well without removing them, but it took a second person to read the dial indicator while I was pulling and pushing on the shaft. The biggest part of the job was unscrewing the shaft, cleaning and lubing them afterward. Pretty slick kit. All in all it turned into a pretty easy job compared to spending a day and a half yanking them out and reinstalling.

IMHO if you are going to go to the trouble to remove them and they are close to the limit then have a spare set on hand. Its tough to get an accurate reading in situ but you can get an idea if they are not bad or clapped out. Never tried the kit.
