Sticky fuel primer on the Cessna 180
Hello there...
What do you guys use to lubricate the fuel primer when it gets sticky...
Thanks

Re: Sticky fuel primer on the Cessna 180
There is a gasoline proof grease which is used for this. A friend gave me a film container full twenty years ago, and each annual, it gets a smear. It works very well. Unfortunately, it's not in the original container, so aside from my sticker, I don't know what it is. Yeah, yeah, MSDS... But I still don't know what it is, but I know you should seek it out. It's the colour and consistency of crystallized honey. I hope that helps a bit....

Would fuel lube work?

I'll probably attract the ire of many here but a small drop of W-100 has always worked for me...

Sounds like Sealube:PilotDAR wrote:There is a gasoline proof grease which is used for this. A friend gave me a film container full twenty years ago, and each annual, it gets a smear. Just a dab will do.. hence your film container lasting 20+ years!

I wouldn't use those products to lube something, they're for putting on tapered pipe threads when you put a fitting into a metal case. They're sealant not a lube.

longjon... You're right, Sealube doesn't have fantastic lubrication properties, but it does have some. It does have the advantage though of not being prone to washout in avgas, which with most other lubes I've seen tried in primers, leaves the o-rings essentially dry after a few pumps.
Never tried it, but this is what comes in the primer overhaul kits that Aircraft Spruce sells:

Re: Sticky fuel primer on the Cessna 180
I've always used Sealube. Got a can that looks like it is from the 1960s or 70s and is still 80% full. Yes, it doesn't have the greatest lubricating properties, but it is way better than a sticky primer and seals very well too. I use it on pipe threads and rubber hoses and gaskets as well and rarely have a problem with fuel leaks.
Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

Good to know, thanks for the info

I was talking about Sealube as well.longjon wrote:I was referring to Sealube , looks like the other product is specifically for that
I've never used the Seal Lube (two words) silicone product in the link I posted. Perhaps someone will give it a try and get back to us in a year or so (or a week) with the results.
As far as silicone based lubricants goes, I've seen DC-4, DC-55, DC-111 all tried in primers, generally with fantastic success that lasted about a week, plus or minus, before the trouble started up again.

The stuff you are looking for is MIL G 6032D (Royco 32). It is a grease that is used in fuel applications such as the tapered fuel shutoff valves, and Piper fuel selectors and works very well on the Cessna primers.PilotDAR wrote:There is a gasoline proof grease which is used for this.

Can't say I've heard of that one. It does appear to meet the requirement.hangarline wrote:MIL G 6032D (Royco 32)
Looks like the Royco 32 isn't made anymore, but EZ Turn Lubricant is made to the same mil-spec and is available through the usual sources.
