Lots of planes came without spinners. Especially Cessnas. Don’t think one is required.

The O-2A and L19 Birddog come to mind.

You would have to look in the Maintenance manual or type certificate, some aircraft can be operated without a spinner providing you remove the backing plate, some cannot.

reasons for removal could be cracking, i have seen a lot of cracked spinners and backing plates.

The type certificate data sheet for the 180 specifies "spinner" 60 times on the certificate under propeller and propeller limits, and none of those references to spinner are to say that it's not required. Perhaps there is an STC approved propeller which does not require a spinner, or an STC to remove the spinner, other than that, the plane should have a spinner.

As said, other types make it optional. If the certification of the plane did not include a demonstration of engine cooling without a spinner, it'll be required. Airplanes have been known to be flown in a non compliant configuration. 'Doesn't make it right, but it happens....

Those aren’t certified aircraft. Civilian ones have to operate under a Limited Type Certificate.

The O-2 ran without spinners to increase cooling airflow in the hot jungles of Vietnam. This was likely a modification done under a military program. In the civilian world...
it would be a major modification and require an STC or whatever they call an LSTC these days.
