Okay guys, a question:
Is there a way, based on engine horsepower and prop dimensions, to come up with a figure for the static thrust produced by that arrangement? Jet engines are rated in those terms of course, and I'm looking for some way to find an equivalent to compare the two powerplants. How would I go about finding the static thrust produced by a 172's 0-320 and prop, for example? I know this sounds like sort of a nutbar question, but it's just for my own interest. I'm not planning to strap a J85 onto a Cherokee or anything.

no, not nutbar at all
Go to google and lookup:
Chris Heintz, Design College website.
Chris is an aeronautical eng. who's worked with de Havilland, Aerospatiale etc. You should find what your looking for regarding your question on determining static thrust : HP/prop size. ..beleive it is in the flight test section ?
(You can also email him your questions, he will discuss your concerns directly as well.)
Hope this helps.

I "think" you can use 5 too 1 as a general rule of thumb.
10,000 SHP will give you 50,000 Lbs thrust.
It is subject to a number of variables obviously.
Your 0320 would be producing perhaps 700lbs thrust at sealevel and 60F with max power.
