Use time in florida wisely

Post by bwilly »

Hello,

I'll soon finish my PPL. Right after I finish I'll be going to Florida for two months or so with the family. My question is, what can I do as far as flight training while I'm there. I'd like to stay fresh and get some flight time before I go back to Canada and continue with my commercial. Can we Canadians fly without a visa or converting to FAA? I was thinking taking a glass cockpit course,or hr building. Any ideas as to how to spend the time wisely without any red tape?

Thanks!

hi there,

if you just want to stay fresh, you will find almost every school offers 'discovery flights' for a set rate. wouldnt hurt to do that, and some establishments might let you do two or three..........so far for staying fresh.....

thread below details conversion;

apparently you can either get an FAA PPL based on your Canada based ppl, you may need to obtain a medical (walk into the examiner's office and you're done in 20 minutes) and a written (word for word from 'GLEIM PRIVATE PILOT TEST' - really easy)
and thats about it.....

good luck!

Sorry on my Blackberry and it doesn't open.

What is this about? If I go down for say aerobatic training, Type training do I need to fill out paperwork and get approved first?

For certain training no. You can do float rating without TSA paperwork at Jack Brown's Seaplane Base. However, for most courses over I believe 15 hrs and the Multi you need to do the TSA thing which includes fingerprints.

Last time I checked you only need to register with the TSA for Private, Instrument, and Initial Multi training.

As Canadians we don't need a Visa to enter the states unlike some countries where you need a Visa just to visit.

As for renting a plane, you can get a FAA Private based on your TCCA Licence.

All you need to do is:
1. A medical.
2. Fill out this http://www.faa.gov/licenses_certificate ... y61-75.pdf and send it in.
3. Make an appointment with the FSDO of your choice.
4. Stop in at said FSDO and complete the paperwork and you receive a FAA licence that is based on your TCCA Licence that is valid for 6 months. This means that must be accompanied by your TCCA licence or it is void.

Once all that is complete you will have to find somewhere to rent a plane and you will need a flight review (aka BFR or biennial flight review) before you can log PIC in the US.

There are no extra costs unlike Canada except for the medical. You don't need to do a written exam unless you want a Full FAA private Licence.

The above sounds correct with the exception of the US medical. My foreign license validation is in process right now with my Canadian Medical.

If you wish to do a conversion (stand alone FAA) instead of a validation then you need a medical.

Sounds right, I was going for the FAA Commercial so I went and got my medical.

Rent a car and drive up to St. Augustine. Get yourself a tour of Southeast Aero, the Extra dealership there, and buy yourself a ride in an Extra. Less expensive than the Texan and way more fun, I promise

Or you could get yourself a flight with Craig Fordem. He's got more time on the Extra than anyone in North America and can give you any kind of advanced spin/jet upset/emergency maneuver training you like. The American Army and Navy contract him to do this type of training with their pilots, and he also coaches the Chilean Airforce demonstration team.
