Absolutely. It's a crazy waste of time not to do this.

During your CPL, you need to get 20 hours (minimum) of instrument time and you need to conduct a bunch of time building. At the very least, you should use the time building to get the 50 hour X/C requirement, and you should use the 20 hours to get familiar (maybe even proficient) with basic IF procedures.

Taking an IFR groundschool (if you have access to one) will help you with your CPL knowledge. And prepping for and taking the INRAT will help you prep for the CPL written.

Ultimately, if you want to fly professionally, you'll need an instrument rating. Sit down with an instructor and come up with a training plan that is efficient. There is no reason why you can't complete an instrument rating within the CPL. It's effective training, and it will save you a bundle of money.

  • Get PPL + Night Rating
    Fly 25 Night XC hours
Fly to 50 solo XC hours
    Do multi rating
    build to 20 hours instrument
    Do multi IFR rating
Flight test CPL. You can do it all in under 200.
