Hey everybody,
I'm doing research on instructor rates across Canada. I would like to know the average hourly pay for each class of instructors.

I'll start: At my flight school

Class 4: $14
Class 3: $16
Class 2: $18
Class 1: $20

Thanks for your help!!!
Cheers :)

Here it's IV: $16, III: $18, II: $22, I: $25. We also pay a bonus for time spent riding the desk when required.

Starting pay for each class:

II: $20.50

There are increases from seniority if deserved, and performance.

At CZBB:

Class IV - $19
Class III - $20
Class II - $22
Class I - ?? not sure

Whether that's enough to pay the bills depends on the season. During the summer, I managed to clear more than $2000 per month on a class IV wage, but it'll be less in the winter

In 1983 I made $19.00 hr. at a flight school in Springbank (Calgary) as a Class 2.

You mean to tell me that instructors haven´t had a real raise in 22 years?

This is exploitation at it´s worst. It is sickening.

4: $14 on probation, $15 after 3 months
3: $16
2: $20 plus $250/mo base for supervisory paperwork
1: $28 for all training plus the $250/mo supervisor base

There is also a bonus applied to all hours billed in a month: summer is $1/hr after 60 hours, $2/hr after 70 hours, $3/hr after 80 hours, $5.50 after 90 hours. The bonus hours are lower in the winter. 30% of the billed time has to be ground briefing to get the bonus.

5% discount on aircraft rentals, 10% for store purchases

No base salary. No benefits. Pay for your own checkouts and re-rides. Staff discount on aircraft rentals.

Some of those are really bad. I made $18 hour to start as a IV in 2000, with Class I giving free time for multi-ifr, planes at cost and free sim.
RIP Doug - you were one of the good ones.

I would say most instructors make less than minnimum wage overall for the hours they actually work.

What can be done to make the industry pay us what we should be making?

I know some schools do make alot of money and are paying what they can, but some clubs (especially in the calgary area) are making huge profits and are passing it onto the management and not the instructors.

Southern Ontario

$50.00/day base + flight pay

Class I = $20.00/hr
Class II = $18.00/hr
Class III = $16.00/hr
Class IV = $14.00/hr

The owner could be tough to work for sometimes but he's still a good egg in my books. He didn"t want to see you starve. Especially during the winter months. This is a small school with 2 instructors only. I made on average 26K/year. Not enough to get rich and retire but it was enough to survive for just starting out in the biz. Compared to other ops I was very thankful and fortunate to land that gig for a first job.
