PPL Ground School Materials - What is needed?

Post by Boeing911 »

I'm going to be taking the Harvs Air PPL online ground school and wanted to know from those who have taken it or from others that have the PPL license. What books and materials are absolutely necessary in getting? I've watched the demo video material and it seems quite thorough and is easy for me to understand and follow.

From doing some research I think that at least the book From the Ground Up (seems to be the industry standard) as well as a plotter and Flight Computer are a necessity. There are many other books that I've read about that different schools provide such as:

Private Pilot Reference Guide
Flight Training Manual
CARS for the Private Pilot
AIM Manual
From the Ground Up workbook
VTA and VNC Charts

Obviously I'll start with the PPL and if I want to continue further to other ratings/licenses then other books/materials will probably be required.

Thanks to anyone for any insights.

Have a Safe Flight!

You have most of it.
I really like Denker's See how it flies. It's free online and probably the best text on how airplanes fly.

I had not heard of this book before, just read through chapter one on energy management and I like how he explains things, so thanks for the recommendation.

If you're looking for what's absolutely necessary, I'd skip the AIM, as you can reference it online. Some people like a physical copy.. but I've never used one.

I haven't taught MET in groundschool, but perhaps Air Command Weather would be a good book to have. Not sure if the From the Ground Up covers enough for PPL MET.
