RVR C position and orientation

Post by currysonic »

Hi all,

I noticed that RVR C sensor out of CYVR is aimed backwards into the approach and is basically a reverse of the RVR A sensor.

Is this so that we as pilots can get a good idea of the distance at which we can expect to see the runway threshold from an approach since being able to see elements of the approach lighting is so important in continuing the approach for landing? What other useful information or impact on our decision making can we derive from RVR C?

Secondly, are ALL RVR C’s a reverse of RVR A?

Thanks!

It was always my assumption, and I stand to be corrected, that an RVR C is also the RVR A of the reciprocal side of the runway. And it's not measuring any particular direction, it's measuring between two points (a source and a receiver).

RVR or runway visual range - means the range over which the pilot of an aircraft on the centre
line of a runway can expect to see the runway surface markings or the lights delineating the
runway or identifying that centre line. (RVR ou portée visuelle de piste)

RVR A - in respect of a runway, means RVR detection equipment that is located adjacent to
the runway threshold. (RVR A)

RVR B - in respect of a runway, means RVR detection equipment that is located adjacent to
the runway mid-point. (RVR B)

RVR C - in respect of a runway, means RVR detection equipment that is located adjacent to
the runway roll out area. (RVR C)

RVR C is advisory information only for rollout.

ie. What do you expect to see after landing? Where do you plan to exit? etc

an easy way to think of it is how the US names them. Threshold, Midpoint, Roll out.
