Over-confident or Conceited Student

Post by tkdowell »

FIM wrote:(b) OVER-CONFIDENT OR CONCEITED. You must first ensure that this type of student has the ability to match the confidence and, if so, set more difficult tasks that require greater accuracy. More criticism of imperfections is advisable. If the student has little ability, counselling may be required. Any signs of familiarity must be discouraged.
Hi everyone,

This is a quote from the FIG, under Meeting the Differences. What is meant by familiarity in this context?

Thanks,

Familiarity, in this case means becoming their “best buddy” rather than keeping a professional student-teacher relationship. Becoming their “best buddy” would not be conducive to being able to rein in their over-confidence.

Its referring to the student's familiarity with the exercise and material. You need to avoid familiarity by keeping it new and challenging for the confident student. Familiarity tends to stroke an over confident student's ego.

Totally irresponsible, unnecessary, dangerous, immature and reprehensible. In other words brillant!
