Crankcase Breather Plugged

Post by Hedley »

A few minutes ago, I was on the ramp at CYSH, and an aircraft
was parked in front of the pumps for gas. It had an ugly brown
icicle hanging down from the end of the crankcase breather. I
broke it off, and looked up the breather tube, and it was plugged
solidly with ice. I got out my leatherman and dug the ice out - it
was frozen solid a good 3 inches up the nearly-vertical tube.

It was a good thing that there were 2 tiny holes drilled, further up
the tube, exactly for this occasion. If they weren't there, the seal
at the front of the crankshaft - which is the next weakest link -
would have been blown out by the built-up crankcase pressure,
and all the oil blows out, and your engine doesn't run well without oil.

It wasn't even very cold. This is eastern Ontario, fer crissakes. It
was only -21C this morning, warming to -15C by noon. Other parts
of Canada are MUCH colder than that!

Before your next flight, ensure that there are relief holes drilled in
your breather tube. Some people like to put one wrap of electrical
tape around them - I don't get that fancy. Just make sure there
are holes in the tube, up from the exit.

After your next flight, peek at the end of the breather tube. You
might be surprised what you might find. Keep in mind that water
is a by-product of combustion, and the colder it is, the more likely
your breather tube is, to freeze and plug.

You probably don't want end up like these guys, during their North
Atlantic crossing:

Holy crap. How did the right propeller depart the aircraft with no damage to the cowling or flange!?

BTW.

This thread reminds me of a crapfest here a while ago, when
I mentioned that a BFC aircraft was stranded on the ramp here
because the bendix was dirty on the prestolite starter, and
wouldn't spin out and engage the flywheel. You may recall
the kids in the airplane didn't know what to do, and they got
on the phone and they were going to tie the aircraft down
until an AME could be flown in to fix it.

I told them to hold on a sec, and I got a can of electrical
contact cleaner, sprayed it on the Bendix drive shaft, and
told them to try it again, and the engine started, and off
they went. A neat trick that I was trying to pass on to
the people here.

Well, the people here on AvCan went bananas on my @ss,
proving once again that no good deed goes unpunished.

Accused me of performing maintenance on a commercially-
registered aircraft without an AMO, no maintenance release,
etc. CARs violations out the ying-yang.

Goodness. All I did was clean an externally-visible portion
of the airplane. Much like I did in this case - I cleaned some
ice off.

So, if you're going to go bananas and attack me again for
performing maintenance without a log book entry, just like
last time, please fill your boots, and this forum, with your venom.

However you may recall last time that the thread got so vicious
and unpleasant that it was deleted. That may or may not affect
your need to attack me here for cleaning the ice out of the
crankcase breather tube.

Was the ice, being adhered to the aircraft, fastened in a manner IAW CARs?

Further, because ice melts, it can be said that it is 'life-limited', was it dealt with IAW 571.09 - Installation and Disposal of Life-limited Parts?

or

602.11 (4) Where conditions are such that frost, ice or snow may reasonably be expected to adhere to the aircraft, no person shall conduct or attempt to conduct a take-off in an aircraft unless

(a) for aircraft that are not operated under Subpart 5 of Part VII,
(ii) the operator has established an aircraft inspection program in accordance with the Operating and Flight Rules Standards, and the dispatch and take-off of the aircraft are in accordance with that program;

or

533.39 Lubrication System
(c) The crankcase must be vented to the atmosphere to preclude leakage of oil from excessive pressure in the crankcase.

I think I can over look your transgression. Of course there is still the issue of the Maintenance Release...

Good on you Hedley..what was or could have been critical was solved with a wee bit of house(plane) cleaning..nothing wrong with that!

Sounds suspicious, how did you break the icicle off, illegal restricted martial arts weapon like nunchucks or throwing stars?

Hedley - I always appreciate your tips to aircraft owners. The threads relevant to private aircraft tend to get lost in "general" and the "maintenance" forum gets little traffic, so it seems the flight training forum is the best place for them. I guess in a way this kind of info can be considered training to become a better aircraft owner. :D

Probably put it on a stick, gave it to a student and told them it was root-beer flavored.

Thanks! Being an aircraft owner teaches you an awful lot about aviation that you don't learn when you rent from the local FTU. Many older airplanes simply won't tolerate a pilot who isn't at least somewhat mechanically adept

PS I didn't mention what I did with the icicle, because I thought it was kind of obvious - a swizzle stick for my next vodka martini!
