Entering transponder airspace without a transponder
What's required to be able to enter transponder airspace such as an airport in class c airspace on a ferry flight without a transponder. Do you have to contact fss before the flight or is a request before entering sufficient?
Re: Entering transponder airspace without a transponder
Don't have a designated airspace handbook handy?
TRANSPONDER AIRSPACE:
Controlled airspace of defined dimensions within which a functioning transponder incorporating an automatic pressure-altitude reporting device is required.
Airspace classified as A,B, or C, is all transponder airspace.
So, in answer to your question....

Call up the controlling agency and if they're in a good
mood, and it's not too busy, they can exempt you.
The actual answer will be found in their MANOPS.

Definitely call on the phone before you leave, not on the radio when you're trying to get into the zone.
Re: Entering transponder airspace without a transponder
If you can get another aircraft with a working transponder to come along with you, you can be the +1 in formation and wouldn't be required to have your transponder on.
Other than that, it depends on the airspace you are looking to fly into. I have had many problems with transponders in the past. The guys out on the east coast did not mind at all. Back down in the Toronto area they would tell me to have it fixed for next time, but would let me in anyway. Out around Calgary they will not let you in at all. If you called ahead, it could be another story though.

Formation is a good idea ... remember that although
you don't need to be tucked in super-tight, you really
should be at the same altitude.
