This has come up here many times before.
A quick search will find the answers.

Briefly:

- the first 60 pages of the FIG. Understand
learning factors and their application, etc.

- CAR 421 experience requirements for Rec,
PPL, night, CPL.

The above will be on the test. Additionally, have
some limited knowledge of:

- Flight test guides for PPL, CPL.

- CAR 405/425 (flight training) and 406/426 (FTU's).

For example:
Are you aware of CAR 405.13/425.13?
How about CAR 405.14?
405.22?
405.31?
425.21?
425.23?

I keep a file of all the exams people have written with that cryptic page about what questions were answered incorrectly. Helpful to go through for people to know exactly the types of questions that will be asked. In general there are three types of questions on the AIRAF: CARs questions, General Knowledge/Theory of Flight and Instructional Technique. Ask your class 1 if they have such a bank. Like the Colonel says, do a search, this question gets asked frequently.

On that note, one should make a post that compiles such threads.

Wow - thanks SSU.

Yeah, I don't do much ab initio instruction any
more. As little as possible, as a matter of fact.

I only do advanced flight instruction: tailwheel,
aerobatic, formation, biplane, multi-engine,
radial engine, turbo-jet, weird types, etc.

And of course new instructors, which I think is
probably the most important advanced flight
instruction there is. Plenty of leverage there,
in terms of your effect on aviation.

You do a good job with a new instructor, he's
going to do a good job with a whack of students.

And the converse is true if you do a bad job.

Thanks again, SSU, for doing that search. Yes,
we need to compile the results into a comprehensive
study guide for the AIRAF.

pilottraining.ca has a flight instructor course, but if that doesn’t interest you, focus on requirements for all licenses and ratings (types of hours) conversions between licenses, student attitudes, learning factors, basic theory of flight, Air law. There wasnt any met on my exam. I did have a diagram of a g1000 diagram that I had to interpret (nose up, low airspeed, imminent stall) lots of GPS interpretations actually.

You could study based on looking up the mandatory subjects and referencing to government materials, CARs etc. but using dedicated AIRAF self study training manuals such as the following will make your preparation more effective and less difficult:

Anyone have a used copy of any of these publications they would like to sell?
Also, why is the Author's name not to be mentioned on this site?

AAT sells overstock surplus of these from past years versions at heavily discounted prices:

http://www.acceleratedaviation.com/webs ... cials.html

You should ask the owner of this website directly (Joseph MacDougall) why he has banned Michael's last name from this website - I am sure he would be happy to explain:

avcanada@gmail.com

If he does not answer then you could also ask Michael directly:

Thanks for the link, I have just dug out my FIG and a Michael C* instructor guide from 1992....looking at the FIG <briefly>, not much has changed. I'm quite surprised.
