Re: Radio License.
The radio License thing is really stupid.
When you start flying , the School requires you to apply for the radio License.
When you aquire a cell phone, the provider charges a fee for the same thing.
I argued that I have one already so please void the fee but the Cell Phone Provider refused.
The radio license is a pure money grab period. Nobody enforces it and would have very little success if they did.
Just another bullshit fee that has been forced upon aviation .
Along the same lines as the Nav Canada fee > there are many pilots that do not use Nav Canada Services but they
are required to pay a fee by law.

Re: Radio License.
Uhhh no. Radios are the domain of Industry Canada and have licensing for all sorts of radios. Amateur Band, Maritime, Air Band, etc. Pilots are not the only people who have to test and pay for radio licenses. And there is often a good reason for it. Don't like it? Stay NORDO or use only bands that IC does not require licensing for like Citizen Band, Family Band, VHF or UHF industrial radios, cell phones, Kids Walkie-Talkies, or 2 papercups attached by a string.fleet16b wrote: The radio license is a pure money grab period. Re: Radio License.
After 40 years of flying, I had to recently call Industry Canada and get
a replacement. It arrived in two days.
A radio Licence is redundant, operating an aircraft radio
in an Aircraft should be limited part of a pre solo exam.

Read your cell phone contract - you are most likely paying a radio license fee when you sign upShiny Side Up wrote:What "fee" are you talking about? The radio license is free.fleet16b wrote:Just another bullshit fee that has been forced upon aviation .

Re: Radio License.
But not your actual radio operator's certificate that you carry around. You know, for aviation. Isn't that what this topic is about?
They even did the good step of getting rid of the old "station license" that airplanes had to carry around with too.
Personally I think that the radio operator's certificate thing is silly when it comes to flying, since its not really enforced, though to rent airplanes I make sure people have one. That's our policy, not anyone else's, which if people say "no", it gives me the opportunity to test so that, well, they can talk on the radio. Its also a polite opportunity to remind them to keep it short and sweet. And I have refused issue of radio operator's certificates when people can't pass the simple multiple choice test. Something to do with a threshold of intelligence to fly the planes.

Re: Radio License.
They should make the Radio Operator's Exam one question:
Is it ever okay to say 'any conflicting traffic please advise' on the radio?
a) True.
b) False.
And a $1000 fine for every violation. That would make the Radio License and all of its associated fees and bureaucracy with it!

At the bar I don't even bother showing the girls my watch to let them know I'm a pilot, I just tell them that we're going to bang and if there is any conflict, please advise.

The multiple choice answers should be: Yes; and No.
Do you pass the threshold of intelligence to fly an airplane? ....I joke!

Yeah it's valid. I paid the $15 to get the red stamp in 1976 and back then was told its good for life, along with the license number.Old Dog Flying wrote:Mine is dated 1957..is it still valid????

Some flying schools will charge the student for writing the exam or having the CFI sign off on my student permit/PStar, some goofiness like that.Shiny Side Up wrote:What "fee" are you talking about? I just remember having to pay $25 or something around there.
Re: Radio License.
I have to do my radio test tomorrow or Monday. I work the ramp at an airport and it is required. The book I was given to study isn't very big and basically just tells you how to properly say numbers heh anyone know how many questions on this test?

Re: Radio License.
TC didn't enforce it.
Yes Barney, it is valid for life, but you know that. Show off!
Ya all don't really want the airwaves to degenerate to the level of CB radios do you? The training is necessary, and in this country, user-pay, so if you want to use a radio you pay for the licence.
What annoyed me was having to pay to get a Radio Operator's Certificate - Marine, in addition to my ROC - Aviation, with the associated fee of course. Then recently I had to obtain a DSC (Digital Selective Calling) endorsement to the ROC-M. I must say though, having seen the newbies in the ROC-DSC course, I'm glad the training is required. The new ROC-M with DSC comes as a plastic card so I asked if they could add the ROC-A to the card. Nope, can't be done. I'd have to get another card to carry around.
