Quick Question

Post by MartinB »

Hi there! Today I leave on vacation to Punta Cana (YYC-YUL as ACA186 and YUL-PUJ tomorrow as ACA1836) and I was just curious if its possible for me to give my camera to the pilots on the YUL-PUJ leg to take pictures for me. Would that be a problem (like against SOP's, etc) or would it be pilots discretion? I want to be an Air Canada pilot when I'm older and having pictures from the cockpit would be quite a motivator for me. Just curious though.

Cheers!
Martin

You could always ask.

Couple problems. It would reflect poorly on the professionalism of a pilot if he were to take a camera to take pictures while he should be operating the aircraft and looking after the safety of his passengers. The pictures during the non-busy portions are the same as what you can see out your own window. If you would like it to include the flight deck, you can take it prior to takeoff after boarding or prior to de-planing. Second, any crew member I have flown with and myself have always refused foreign electronics in the cockpit for security and safety reasons. You just never know these days.

But again, you could always ask.

Nothing in our SOP / FOM that I can find that would prohibit that during cruise and above 10,000asl. Ask the crew.

Whoa there, all knowing peanut gallery...

I just told the guy it doesn't hurt to ask.

I'm just not one to play tourist with someone else's camera gear in the cockpit, and that has been discouraged in the past.

Perhaps the term 'foreign electronics' was too complex for some of you. As an example people ask to keep their computers in the flight deck, plugged in to our one power supply. We don't know if these things are transmitting/recording/have a bummed power supply/melty Lithium battery, whatever, so the crew I was with said no, and I'm inclined to agree.

If you people disagree, great. If playing Ansel Adams in the cockpit is what gets you off through your work day, great. I doesn't really affect me or the price of beer.

To the original poster. Again, just ask the crew.
