I've flown regularly with my Osprey backpack which is about 3" too wide and 5" too tall. I know personally it fits on the overhead on anything bigger than a 319... The proper way. That being said in 7 years of flying with it I was only given issue with AA in Florida. I just went to another security gate and all was well. I flew AC on Jazz (CRJ) last week with it and they just sky checked it along with basically everyone else's stuff.

That being said it's a risk.. I've personally gotten lucky but you may not. 9/10 times I find if it's close enough they won't even ask to check it on the size checker. Just walk through like you own it.

do the on line check in than skip the baggage check once through security do a gate check to avoid the $25 fee. I have a wife and 2 kids. each one of them carries 1 carry on and "1 personal item" not once has we paid for checked baggage saving us hundreds of dollars.

My last 4 flights, I was told gate check was no longer an option because of their new carry-on policies. Your mileage may vary, the application of the rules seems to vary wildly some days. I find YUL to be the biggest sticklers for baggage.

I always online check in. Did it yesterday YVR to YWG. Went though security, gate checked it when they asked if anyone wanted to and it was delivered to the carousel at the end of my second flight. $25 saved.
