Reason for so much Pilot hiring

Post by controlrest »

Wondering how come AC is hiring so many pilots most recently .

They hired about 450 in 2019, plan is over 800 in 2020 .
As per the Fleet plans there is hardly any growth or expansion. A220 replacing EMB & 737 replacing the older 320 series . Wide body fleet has completed the inductions .

True the new duty regs would require some extra crew but with more than a 1000 already hired in the past 3-4 years and another 800 on the way its almost 35% being on the property less than 5 yrs .

Is there a future expansion plan which is unrevealed yet ?

What are the retirements in the next 5 years ?

Does it mean past 2020 no more hiring for the next few years ?

1. Retirements, approx 100-125/year

2. Up gauge of traditionally regional routes (yqm, yqt, yqb, ydf, yfc, yqy, bna)

3. New routes to Australia and New Zealand. Additional Rouge seasonal routes to Europe and South America. 4 ex-Singapore and Tap 330s were bought to free up the 787 for the longer segments.

Increasing the frequency to Delhi, 2x a day this summer out of YYZ.

New US routes with the A220. YUL-SEA and a few more.

4. New duty regs.

Where is the demand coming from? Just look around YVR and YYZ, the increase in foreign carriers and their up gauges.

Next year is back to normal. 150 or slightly better as over half of our pilots are less than 5 years tenure. It will slow
