YHM Runway Selection

#1 Post by HiLo » Fri Jul 17, 2015 7:14 am

A question to anyone familiar with 737 ops out of YHM:

Is there any rule of thumb for predicting which runway a departing flight will take? Doesn't seem to be wind. Destination, perhaps?

Any help appreciated.

We try to use all information available when making that decision: wind, temp, runway length/surface condition, direction of flight, and notams. We come up with a plan then verify our performance and limitations meet that plan off any runway before departing. This includes intersection departures and considerations of tail wind departures.

The flavour of the day in YYZ quite often determines the active in YHM.

Whats more into the wind 12 or 30? They're much longer. That should get your guessing average up by a lot.

Thanks. YYZ explains a lot.

My confusion came after seeing a CargoJet 767 to out west take 06 (the active) followed by WJ taking 30 on a flight to the east coast.

Quite often 06/24 is too short for the 737 to work for performance with a full load so they will use the long runway.
