WestJet Future Fleet Plans

#1 Post by brooks » Fri Feb 24, 2017 1:00 am

It appears that 10 B737 MAX9 orders magically appeared on their 2016 year end financial report. Thoughts?

"(iv) WestJet's Boeing 737 MAX 7 and MAX 8 aircraft orders can each be substituted for the other model of aircraft, or for Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft."

What so magical about that? The MAX 9 has almost the same range of the MAX 8 with better yield. So don't be surprised if more MAX 9 "magically" appear.

Now the Max 10 would really be interesting.

Am I reading the table right? It shows a net increase of -zero- 737's over the next five years. Five years being a reasonable projection timeframe in this industry.

Reading into that, pilot advancement at Mainline will be via attrition only. How many retirements are upcoming over the next 5 years?

Projecting any net fleet increase beyond five years without understanding the nuances of the marketplace that far off, which no one can, is a little suspect.

DP.

You are correct in a sense. The chart assumes returning every leased aircraft as they come up. They've already decided to keep a few that came up recently. Not much as far as retirements go being such a young group. Real growth is coming from the soon to be NPA rules but the biggest factor will be widebodies when they arrive. Last bid had thirty something upgrades at WestJet.
