Anyone know why WestJet missed on 33 yesterday around lunchtime? I'm assuming someone blew an approach. I watched the nose come down, then it went up, the gear went up, and they circled for 27. Wind wasn't that strong, ceiling around 8000', and good vis. Perhaps they like doing circuits.

Don't know about YXE but they did one in this afternoon at CYOW (we were number 2 behind them).
Apparently they get stuck by ATC at something like 6000', high on profil & 3 or 4 miles before the rwy 25.
They didn't even went below 2500' for the missed approach.

--->VFR circuit, back to the queue and ready for paper work

Not sure on either instance, but I can say that toon town usually has the strong upper winds from the west and we often get held high from atc going in there.... then it snowballs, we just are too high. In YOW the same thing happens with atc keeping us high. We are undergoing a program with transport right now(FOQA) that monitors all of our data from the 700 data recorders and is submitted for analysis. One of the targeted areas is being stable by 1000' on the approach..ie. landing flap, ref plus 20 and trending back and on glideslope(or assumed3degree) with engines spooled. Now that this is in place with pilot gatekeepers as the Refs in this, The pilots are quite carefull now to meet these peramiters. If one or none are met you get your go-around.....My guess if there was no traffic in front of them in YOW this is what happened.
