I think this can all be searched from the old press releases, but I think there is still roughly 30 something deliveries between now and 2016. Our new business plan will be out well before then for plans beyond that. I believe we are taking 6 tails this year. A new 800 is showing up next week.

Hope that helps.

Dave.

It is impressive to witness WestJet's business model is both resilient and dynamic in times of domestic and global market "fluctuations". Securing six jets this year and thirty to 2016, with forecasts after that are reassuring for pilots, as this gives the pilot group to plan for long term goals too. I am not employed by WestJet, but I am using it as a case in point for positive influence this places on the industry. This is simply my altruistic opinion.

The wildcard will be how many of the lease return options they actually exercise ? 33 on order to the end of 2016 but they have the option to return 22 which would give a net increase of 11 aircraft. 33 vs 11, a difference of around 220 pilots. Then there is retirements, how does the planned attrition look over the next 5 years ?

Hey URC,

You raise an excellent point and I agree the "wildcard" is what controls the direction of the company. This set of variables (e.g. x number of aircraft, attrition, growth and mergers) is governed to a great extent by the forces of supply and demand within the market. However, when a company exhibits a solid business model, to weather the ups and downs of these forces, then the employee/shareholder group exhibit a healthy level of productivity which cycles back to the health of the company.

As a pilot, I would like to see nothing more than the 220 pilots and more secure employment. That may not always be the case with these variables but WestJet's cautiously optimistic approach enables the company to grow and make mistakes without compromising the foundation of it's success and it's employee/shareholders within the constraint of these variables: thus retaining more of the aircraft.

As for the attrition in the next five years...open to anybody's input.

I'm curious. Has Westjet parted with any aircraft (NG's I mean, not the original -200's)? Aren't they going into their 10th or 11th year with new aircraft? Just wondered if the oldest of the -700's are still in the fleet.

001, delivered in May 2001, is still there, to be potentially returned in January 2013 (assuming they give them back in the same order they took them). According to the 2001 Annual Report, the first 10 leased aircraft were initially under 14 year term operating leases.
