Re: Don Cherry - A Great Canadian Pecked By A Thousand Sparr
I think what C/S is trying to say is that most real scientists tend to be full of doubt and skeptics..kinda goes with the profession so to speak. In that game as soon as someone puts forth an idea you have dozens trying to prove it wrong which is why on average we tend to put a great deal of trust in science. But like everything given enough time we find that certain concepts have been proven wrong and that is what science is all about. I think he feels that DS is a little too certain about his concepts.
Don Cheery ...well Don has learned that boring doesn't sell so he's not very boring.

Dr. Suzuki is in fact a zoologist (which makes him a form of biologist). Global warming falls into the field of climatology (which is a subfield of physics). He is in fact speaking well outside of his field of expertise. Granted, he is very well spoken which distracts people from the above mentioned facts.David Suzuki is a noted scientist who delivers knowledge from his own area of expertise in a calm professorial way, and acts as an informative source to translate scientific knowledge
Edit to add:
RS1: That was an excellent explanation of science.

His PHD is in Zoology, but his entire working life was in genetics. You would no doubt be surprised at all the different disciplines of science that contribute to the global warming field in addition to just climatology. When David Suzuki speaks about the climate he is not talking about his own research, he is translating what "climatologists" are saying backed up by many different fields of study for normal people consumption. You see, being a scientist himself he has respect for what other scientists are saying unlike many here, and his qualifications for relating what they're saying to us are infinitely more credible than yours or mine are for refuting it.mcrit wrote:Dr. Suzuki is in fact a zoologist (which makes him a form of biologist). I actually listen to a lot of scientists on television and radio, and one thing I am constantly impressed with is their refreshing habit of saying "we don't know" when they don't know something. David Suzuki is no exception.

Davey Motorbike skillfully blends fact with his opinions, and
delivers this deceptive mixture with a professorial manner.
He is a very skilled propogandist, but that doesn't mean I
have to drink his grape Kool-aid. Davey Motorbike is much
more of a politician than a scientist, and I don't have to like
his politics.
What original research has he published recently, and in
what areas? Publish or perish, goes the saying in Academia.
enough to notice the irony. I thought it was tremendously funny
Now, Rockie will attack my qualifications on the subject of
being a blowhard without an ounce of doubt!

You're welcome. It's nice that there is one person here brightCongrats, Colonel, it's seldom I read something that
makes me truly laugh out loud, but that one did. Made my day!

Why no, I don't doubt for a second your qualifications on being a blowhard.Colonel Sanders wrote:Now, Rockie will attack my qualifications on the subject ofbeing a blowhard without an ounce of doubt!
It's your qualifications questioning David Suzuki on pretty much any scientific subject under the sun that I doubt. That's why I was asking.

Followed your link. He retired 10 years ago, and has written
15 children's books.
Dr Seuss wrote 46 children's books. Does that mean that
Dr Seuss knows 3x as much as Davey Motorbike about
Global Warming?

Re: Don Cherry - A Great Canadian Pecked By A Thousand Sparr
Yes. Both are subdisciplines of biology. The issue of wether or not global warming is man made, (or indeed if it is taking place at all), is an issue of climatology (physics). Suzuki is out of his lane.Rockie wrote:His PHD is in Zoology, but his entire working life was in genetics.
This is somewhat like Buffalo Joe 'translating' the finer points of close formation for public consumption.Rockie wrote:When David Suzuki speaks about the climate he is not talking about his own research, he is translating what "climatologists"
Speak for yourself in that regard. I don't need anyone to translate physics for me, (well, except for string theory and the finer points of general relativity).Rockie wrote:and his qualifications for relating what they're saying to us are infinitely more credible than yours or mine are for refuting it.

+1I don't need anyone to translate physics for me
What percentage of the people here are familiar with Bessel
functions, for example? Partial differential equations? Riemannian
geometry? Fast Fourier Transforms?

Now your big brain has me thoroughly intimidated and I'll never believe anything David Suzuki says again. He's a hack compared to you...
Nah, I'm kidding. Suzuki's still way more qualified than either you or (especially or) Mcrit so I'll think I'll believe him instead despite your IMPRESSIVE physics knowledge. I might add he's also much more mature than you are and wouldn't dream of making up stupid nicknames for you.
BTW, we wave dicks around here, not math formulas.

Looks like Rockie gets the last word here.
Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?
