I stand to be corrected but as far as I know every carrier but AC operates to the CAR's. That means a 14 hour duty day (or night) that can be extended an additional hour with an augment pilot. Leg length has nothing to do with it, it is strictly duty time as far as the CAR's are concerned.

+1

We aren't necessarily scheduled for a 14+ hr duty day when augmented. Many times they will schedule a third pilot just in case. Ie: yyz - San Jose winter time sometimes comes in at less than a 14hr duty day but they almost always augment it.

Problem is unless you have a bunk or a J seat for one pilot to rest in, you just end up with 3 tired pilots in the FD instead of 2. Hardly a big increase in safety.

We have a Club Class seat reserved for breaks.

The majority of our augmented flights are day time flights. If duty is around 13:45 they put an extra FO on.
