What an truly antagonistic thing to say. It has nothing to do with the thread at all.LisaS wrote:My guess is the're going to be Sky Regionals. Sooner or later.
Good, they'll match they new terminal building nicely I'm sure.ILS26_Steep wrote:Really??? New hangars on the island too!!!!
Re: New Hangars for Porter
New hangars on the island you say......
Mind you there is only so much land available down there for expansion. South end?
Have you expanded the hangars on the airside even more?
Is Orange gone already? I know that Sky Regional was looking at that facility.
I may have to make a few phone calls or worse make my way down there for a "look".

Re: New Hangars for Porter
Can't fit a Q400 in the old Ornge hangar. VAL barely fit there Dash 7 in there years ago when they had the Dash 7 medevac contract. Then, VAL had to use a ramp to lift the nose wheel and lower the tail at the same time to get it in there. The doors aren't wide enough for the wingspan of the Q400 anyways...
Re: New Hangars for Porter
If YKF, would it be a new-build hangar on Apron 4?dashx wrote:New hangars for Porter in Kitchener?
Re: New Hangars for Porter
Funny, people I know in London (YXU) have heard Porter will open up a base with hangars over there as well. Perhaps Porter is shopping around, but I haven't heard anything internally to suggest this might happen. If anything, I can see something being set up in Hamilton out of anywhere in Southern Ontario, but I doubt it.

Dash 7 102 / 103 wingspan 93 ft height 26 ft 2 inches (approx)
Dash 8 400 wingspan 93 feet 3 inches height 27 feet 4 inches (approx)
well what do you know....14 inches higher. 3 inches wider...

A ramp? I would like to see the pictures. We used to lift the nose with a rig and tow the 7 inside on a contract. Sorry no pictures (pre digital days......)Then, VAL had to use a ramp to lift the nose wheel and lower the tail
Re: New Hangars for Porter
As far as I know Kitchener and London are the front runners right now and the big issue is Porter doesnt want to pay for the Hangar and just wants to lease it. London initially told them to stick it but things I guess have changed now and things havent changed London is supposed to be making some sort of announcement in the near future potentially about this.

Very interesting. I guess the rumours of having another crew base is going to be squashed. Is cost that much to rent in YOW or YUL where they actually fly? Im thinking a lot of aircraft ferrying cost vs renting a hangar at a Porter destination.

Re: New Hangars for Porter
I would guess Porter is going to expand into heavy maintenance. Deluce did that with Air Ontario in YXU. Porter currently contracts heavy Mtc to a company in Sault Ste Marie, with paint being done in Muskoka.
With the size of the fleet growing, they are going to need a cheaper way to do heavy stuff on Q400's. Plus with the growing popularity of the Q400, they can get contracts with other airlines, US side or Canadian to do maintenance for. But who knows. It does sound more reasonable to do it at a new crew base. But not much hangar space in YOW, and Halifax hangars are all owned by IMP Group.

Aren't their scheduled flights practically ferry flights anyway with the pax loads they have?
j/k

Re: New Hangars for Porter
There is a new hangar currently under construction at the North West end of the airport at YKF, anyone know difinitively whos it is? I have only seen it from the air so no idea if there are any signs or anything.
Re: New Hangars for Porter
Like ILS26_Steep said they do a lot of maintenance at YAM. The company there is putting up a new hangar right now and there are multiple blank Q-400's on the main apron...possibly some for Porter in the future?
Re: New Hangars for Porter
No. Q400's fresh off the assembly line for Porter; JD Aero does heavy maintenance for multiple clients as well as pre-deliveries. If it were Porter's it would be a quick trip from Downsville direct to the island, in the hangar for a few days and then into the system.bverwegen wrote:Like ILS26_Steep said they do a lot of maintenance at YAM. We are expecting 2 more of our 26 total (rumours before year end) and also rumours of exercising the remaining 4 options soon.

Re: New Hangars for Porter
I went out to YKF today and the Signs on the side of the of the building said it is "Millard Air Hangar #56". Size looks big enough for 737/A320/Q400
Re: New Hangars for Porter
Story in the London Free Press today about what a dud the new cargo hangar is (used to park the airport manager's plane, and there was a stag and doe in there as well). Wonder if the airside doors are big enough for a Q400?
Re: New Hangars for Porter
The new hangars are the start of a new MRO. Rumour has it that it will be carrying out maintenance on "charter" airline type aircraft, B737,A320,B757. Projected start up date is early March 2012. The main people involved are Wayne Millard and a few ex C3,Sky maintenance executives. Should be interesting.
Re: New Hangars for Porter
One of the Flightexec fuel truck guys told me over the weekend that the new MRO was to take over the Esso fuel dealership but a financial backer exited the scene days ago, so the Esso dealership stays with Flightexec until further notice. Go figure...TrimTank wrote:The new hangars are the start of a new MRO. Rumour has it that it will be carrying out maintenance on "charter" airline type aircraft, B737,A320,B757. Re: New Hangars for Porter
I Remember using an old small lawntractor for getting the city express dash 7 in the old hanger on the island,,,Had to get a running start in the winter then cross fingers you didnt hit the tips ,,,aw the good old days of SMS
Re: New Hangars for Porter
Maybe Porter will take over the Jazz hangar in London which will be empty by next year.
Re: New Hangars for Porter
It was Deluce who built it so the irony would be palpable.
