Sad to read this, I think the DC3 with turbines is a great aircraft.

Coordinates? Anartica South 78.184N 114.58W? Just where did this take place?
78.184N -- -- North?
Or was it 78.184S

Re: Borek DC-3T accident in Antarctica
Glad to see these CADORS are proof-read. Last I checked, Antarctica was in the southern hemisphere, nowhere near North America, and most certainly not in Canada. Oh well...hope she's up and running again soon. Beautiful machine.

Re: Borek DC-3T accident in Antarctica
I Google Earthed both possibilities. The north location puts it in the extreme north-western Arctic Islands of Canada..off shore.Check Pilot wrote:Coordinates? Anartica South 78.184N 114.58W? Just where did this take place?

The south location puts it in Antarctica. I suspect the N in the co-ord's is an error.
This statement "Minister's Observer has been appointed. Further information to follow." makes me think that the accident investigation is being handled by another jurisdiction with a Canadian observer.
Maybe JC will speak up..I think he is marching with the penguins right now.
Re: Borek DC-3T accident in Antarctica
Nobody got hurt, that's what counts. If the CADORs is any indication of what really happened, the worst that's going to come out of it is that the pilot didn't make himself aware of the "runway" (such as it is) condition before he departed.
Sucks to hear about a DC-3 getting banged up though, even if it is a turbine conversion.

no sig because apparently quoting people in context is offensive to them.

Anyone see any problems with the reporting area - the Latitude and then the title of this thread.rum-. wrote:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Minister's Observer is appointed by TCCA to be involved with TSB investigations.rum-. wrote:This statement "Minister's Observer has been appointed. Further information to follow." makes me think that the accident investigation is being handled by another jurisdiction with a Canadian observer.
http://www.tc.gc.ca/tcss/TSB-SS/MinObs/menu.html#1The purpose of the Minister's Observer Program is to obtain timely information relevant to the Minister's responsibilities for safety and to contribute to the identification and evaluation of hazards revealed by investigations into aviation, rail, and marine occurrences.
The Minister's Observer will obtain factual information from an ongoing investigation, advise the Department of any significant regulatory factors, identify deficiencies that require immediate corrective actions and coordinate the required support to an occurrence investigation. The Minister's Observer will not participate in any regulatory investigation or enforcement action taken by the Department in relation to any occurrence to which the observer is assigned.

Re: Borek DC-3T accident in Antarctica
Now this is interesting.
The CADORS report for this accident has been removed from the CADORS data base.
The report number 3508 and 3510 are both there, but, 3509 has been removed.
Whats up with that??

Wow, I bet Penikitt really blew a gasket when he got that phone call.
No Christmas card for that crew this year. Glad to hear everyone was ok.

Maybe Buffalo Joe could send his DC-4 recovery crew down.

Re: Borek DC-3T accident in Antarctica
Enterprise had this happen to theirs in Antarctica from a wind storm and it was repaired. I'm sure the Borek BT-67 will be repaired too.

Wierd... happened on take-off but looks like the props were feathered not fine?
We have no effective screening methods to make sure pilots are sane.

Re: Borek DC-3T accident in Antarctica
Thanks for posting the pictures "brownbear", I knew we were not entirely a "Police State", yet.
Re: Borek DC-3T accident in Antarctica
I'm not sure what you meant about the police state......
But the pictures are not mine, they have been passing around in several emails.
I'm just glad no one was hurt. I feel sorry for the AME on that plane. It would be a tough job getting it safely out of there. Lots of pressure.
I was a Borekian for about 5 years..... The AME on that plane has his work cut out for him. Actually all the AME's in the area would there to help to.

Re: Borek DC-3T accident in Antarctica
Most likely the reference relates to hydro's post above that used to contain a link to the website where those photos were originally posted by a passenger that was on board the aircraft. However, while the link is missing from his post, there is no indication that it has been edited so I don't imagine that any of the mods are responsible...
Re: Borek DC-3T accident in Antarctica
Ah.... I had not seen that blog before. All the links I posted came in a very public email... sent in many directions.CD wrote:Most likely the reference relates to hydro's post above that used to contain a link to the website where those photos were originally posted by a passenger that was on board the aircraft. Angle iron, herc straps and some new props and fly it out of there. The wings look good and most of the structural damage could be straightened out and stick some gear under there some how.
I bet it's cold and windy in that location.......

Re: Borek DC-3T accident in Antarctica
Thanks CD, you explained it very well.
I am very interested in the future of the DC3T and was disappointed to see the link with the blog removed. Being an AME, this forum and others, keep us in the "Know" of the outside world.
I am not in favor of censorship and immediately had a suspicion someone, with editing rights, thought else wise. Thanks again "brownbear".

Re: Borek DC-3T accident in Antarctica
Well, looks like there will be a few Borek DC-3T captains looking for work. I'm looking for some experienced DC-3T Captains. If any of you DC-3 guys need a job, look back a few weeks ago at the job postings for DC-3T Captains and send me resume's.
Ciao!
Ciao!
