Pilots - can go through lowest tier of high school and still become a pilot
A pilot can be successful without any high school period, there is no minimum education requirement.

As long as you can read and write and understand basic math you can be quite successful as a pilot.
Actually "Cat" there's a lot of education required, it just happens that non of it is offered until recently at a University. If you added up the time spent in groundschools, flight training, recurrents etc it would be significant. Not to mention the money that is required to be paid to achieve said licences ratings etc.

For as long as I've been flying it never ceased to amaze me how much pilots try to dumb down and brush off our profession like a hobby. I am a licensed professioanl pilot who took years to achieve the necassary training, skills and experience to get to where I am now. I've seen more than 1/2 of those that started with me fail or quit. If it's so easy everybody would be doing it.

And I stand by my original comment.

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no

After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

unlikely why some of what has already been posted is correct . However the biggest consquence unions face in the next 40 yrs is more technology,
the auto unions have seen it what used to take 4 workers now takes 1or less.

Aircraft are no exception,to the harsh reality of billion + certification costs and oil back over 100bucks a barrel.

The push is already on to further automate the systems in airliners inorder to move to certification of 1 pilot. Surrounded by bulletproof doors and remote survailence equipment. Economics and efficiency drives the bus folks ever since the orville and wilbur wright.

but there is going to be alot of work in labour/mgt negoitations :smt040

They are somewhat comparable i'd say.
Isn't there something like 700,000 teachers in Canada ? How many flying jobs are out there ? 10,000 maybe ? How many "Good" flying jobs ? 7000 maybe ? Do 100 times more people want to become teachers than pilots ?

Even with their "college" and "unions" the teachers are still bitching about pay and that there are too many of them chasing too few jobs.

Replace the word "Teacher" with "Pilot" in this article and you can hardly tell the difference ....

Even though a union could possibly offer a fair wage to everyone, do they deserve it? Also, with a union, your salary will cap out pretty quickly, non-union workers can make way more than unionized ones. There was an attempt a couple of years ago to form a union for helicopter pilots and engineers (HEPAC) but it never got off the ground ;). A lot of the populous are all talk and no action, you can try to form one but in the end, most people won't bother, sad but true.

For the meantime, if you feel that you are being treated unfairly at work and your employer is breaking the law by making you do unsafe things then I would suggest talking to your local labour authority about how to rectify these issues.

The relationship I was inferring wasn't teachers to pilots, it was that unions always come down to the money.

And almost always at the detriment to the performance of the job the union members are supposed to do. They become complacent due to job security, they become unmotivated because raises and progress are scheduled and awarded merely for showing up and they become bitter because the initial glow of everyone being treated equally (and all the benefits that come with that) turns into the dark cloud of disappointment as they realize there is no way to differentiate themselves or excel since it's all about time on the job not performance on the job.

That's how I see it anyway.

In that respect yes I could see it happening but once again only if the membership wants the unions to go after that. In the case of pilot unions however they in my opinion have remained in place because we have no college or governing body of our own. Once again, as a member of ALPA I have been VERY impressed with how reasonable they have been and do the best they can to not drive a company into the red. What the hell's the point of that? A healthy company is good for all however, making profits on the backs of employees is what we should ALL be against.

I hate to tell you this, but that is what the entire free market economy is based on.
And will never change.

To all of you that have been bashing union members and calling them lazy (in one way or another) I take offence.
You are imposing a stereotype on a huge sector of the population with little experience of the benefits that a union provides to employee's. You are also assuming that the person that works on an assembly line doing a repetitive job doesn't deserve to see improvements to there employment well being. Given that our rate of inflation is moving so much faster than income and salary levels, unions are needed more than ever to ensure that people are able to live, and more importantly retire and continue to be functioning members of society that contribute monetarily to our countries Gross Domestic Product. Otherwise we'll be selling our houses and eating dog food in order to be able to live past 70.

MY union represents almost 16,000 people (hundreds of different trades and jobs) and we are currently in negotiations with our employer for a new contract. This contract will see improvements to our health benefits, per diems, retirement plan and our wages.
How would anybody get this achieved without representation for our employee's?!!

Having said all this there are times when a union may not be the best course of action, and this is it.
A nation wide pilot union would in many cases be the end of many small businesses that otherwise survive on a shoestring but are non the less a contributor to the economies of hundreds of communities.

To those that are in predicaments that are less than savory I suggest that you take a hard look at weather or not it is worth doing what your doing. I have quit several jobs because my gut told me to.
