KD

Post by awitzke »

Before I got a job I scoffed at the whole "get used to eating KD every night" comments.

5 nights in a row. Macaroni. Although not KD, I've got the bulk stuff. A bit of Ragu and a can of tuna = dinner for $2.00.

Yes, but at least you have flow-through to the Westjet mainline.

It's actually relatively affordable to eat very well, granted probably not two bucks a night cheap.... but you could increase quality by ten times for triple the price without too much difficulty.

I suggest a slow cooker, easy, tasty, cheap.

Try ditching the "cheez" sauce and put olive oil, parmesan and oregano on it while it is hot, and a pitch of salt. Sometimes a change is as good as a break.

Switched up the KD recently with plain kefir to substitute the butter and milk with the sharp cheddar sauce. Leftover taco beef seasoning cooked in some lean ground beef, mixed that in with the KD.

Lower in fat and a nice bite from the kefir!

I was never a fan. I did ramen noodles for years and because I enjoyed them, but can't eat them any more because they set my stomach on fire and they are just about worse than nothing in terms of nutritional value and health effects.

Really, you are robbing Peter to pay Paul eating like that. How much is your health worth? Not just down the road either, but your immediate health?

esp has the right idea. Basically, anything you can do to stretch the expensive parts of your meals and blend them in with the cheap and less desirable parts with the minimum of processed ingredients. Soups, stews, stir fries, etc... using very little if any meat (quinoa and beans are good sources of protein), lots of cheap staples like rice, potatoes, squash, and a smattering of frozen (best) or canned (okay) vegetables if you can't get fresh for any decent price.

Ahh, I'm not exactly worried about my health. I'm in good shape, take vits, work out daily and eat healthy as much as I can. Honestly I probably eat better now than I did in a big city with the ease of fast food at my fingertips. Good breakfast (oatmeal is cheap + a bananna), and lots of fruit throughout the day. Bought in bulk it's pretty cheap. I've begun mixing and matching a few things, getting creative. Beans, tuna, ground beef, bulk chicken, rice, quinoa, and more. Hardest part up here is the grocery is really expensive so I have to buy things that don't spoil too quick when I go shop in the town over.

How are you not stuffed to the gills (pun intended) with Walleye yet? I spend about a half hour every couple days around 8pm and pull in 5 or 6 good ones. 2 go in the fridge and the rest in baggies in the freezer. Buy some spices and get creative with baking, and also go to town with the Fish Crisp and fry to your hearts content. Free food doesn't get better than this! A summer contract for me means no wife (if you're hitched) around to cook, but also means if you want, you can eat a pound of fried walleye at midnight, naked, balancing beer on your stomach, watching porn. I'm doing that right now. My motorcycle is also parked in the living room.

I pack the freezer, but not with store bought crap. Too expensive and awful for you. Frozen veggies and the very occasional frozen pizza when they're on sale is all the comes in a box. I buy family packs of meat, especially if discounted. Portion meal size into freezer bags. Very convenient. Ground beef (made into burger patties) , chicken breasts/thighs, etc.
I cook EVERYTHING in bulk and portion it out. I'll make a huge pot of pasta sauce and bag 10 portions. My whole freezer is just meal sized bags.

I'm big on wraps, (on that note, always wrap it around there.... ) buy tortillas, meat, and whatever you want to put in them- Philly steak, chicken or pork burritos, whatever. Tortillas come in 10 packs, add in the fresh peppers, meat, cheese, whatever wrapped tight in saran wrap or freezer bags and packed in the freezer takes an hour or two, and costs about 30 bucks. 3 bucks each! Awesome for lunch and second dinner. ;)

Well, I am sure as your career progressess you will soon be able to ditch the bulk macaroni and eat genuine KD with Tuna that was not meant for cats....dream big.

But on a more serious note, there is a whole huge advertising industry that spends billions to make even more billions convincing people that taking "vits" will make them healthier. It just is not so. Talk to your doctor about it at your next medical...they are brought to you by the same people that changed water bottles to rehydration systems. If you really do need "vits" you definitely are not eating healthy, as your diet should provide you wth all the necessary nutrition.

Hey Aaron, toss brown rice, black beans or any beans, lentils etc. (soaked or from cans) canned tomatoes, onions, can of corn, broccoli, carrots, tons of spices in fact anything you like to eat, tuna, whatever, in the rice cooker and it will cook the whole thing into a lovely tasty stew in 40 minutes that will stuff you, keep nicely, can be frozen and will keep you regular. Lose the pasta, it's nothing but useless carbs and the beans will entertain your crew members on those long flights!

A crockpot also known as a slow cooker is spectacular.

Frozen chicken or roast in the morning becomes a delicious family meal in around 8 hours. That means evening meal plus leftovers for a single guy.

For chicken I use some salt, parsley flakes, oregano, cumin, honey and either garlic (a spoon of the puree that comes in jars) or a dash of cinnamon.

For Beef, add 4 oz of water, Worcester sauce and a couple shakes of Montreal steak rub. Onion if you like cooked onion.

You can put potatoes and carrots or corn in with them for full meals too.
