An Air Canada pilot diverted an international flight to rescue a pup in peril.
The Toronto-bound plane departed Tel Aviv on Sunday when the pilot noticed one of the cargo hold heaters had malfunctioned.
Inside was a dog identified in media reports as Simba.
"The captain grew rightfully concerned for the dog's comfort and wellbeing," Peter Fitzpatrick, a spokesman for Air Canada, told CBC in an email. "With the altitude it can become very uncomfortable, and possibly the situation could have been life threatening if the flight had continued."
Air Canada rules state that ambient temperatures need to be at a minimum of 10 degrees when dealing with canine travellers.

Too soon Johnny It's press for Air Canada, I am sure they can swallow 10k (or whatever the actual cost of the diversion was). It's cheaper than most of their ad campaigns.

Problem is, it disgusts a lot of people who couldn't give a sh*t about animals. You can't have public opinion both ways.

And you know this, how? (I'm assuming you're not talking about yourself here).HiLo wrote:Problem is, it disgusts a lot of people who couldn't give a sh*t about animals. You can't have public opinion both ways.

Read some of the comments on articles. It gives you great hope for humanity.

The comments appear to be positive in the majority. There's always going to be those that look at the $10,000 fuel bill, landing fees, etc and the 300 or so person hours of delay and declare that one pug life couldn't possibly be worth that much.
I noticed one article that mentioned that that type of dog isn't allowed to travel in the hold in the first place. Apparently short nosed dogs such as bulldogs, pugs, etc account for half of the overall dog in transit deaths due to breathing and cooling problems associated with their short snoutedness.
