An explanation:Loon-A-Tic wrote: ↑Sat Apr 04, 2020 6:41 amBetter allocation of runways at CYYZ would be a good start or an explanation of the logic being applied. I regularly taxi north to 05/23 runway from Terminal 1 while passing a carrier taxiing south from the Terminal 3 for the 06/24 runways and the reverse on landing.
Easier for departure to have aircraft split up/crossed over on the ground rather than have to do it in the air. Yes it can be a PITA but for the overall capacity of the airport, it works.
For arrivals the same is true. Generally you'll land on the runway closest to your arrival fix. There is some juggling to balance and some accommodation of requests, but for overall capacity, some get less than optimum runway assignments.
What helps departure/arrival out makes for a messy ground operation. We don't just taxy you all over just for fun you know.
