Interesting move, now they can haul their own freight (ie groceries) without having to contract out and save $$$....this eventually could have repercussions for northern airlines that rely on freight contracts to help pay the bills (ie. Wasaya, Air Cree, Air Inuit, First Air and CDN North) should the Northwest Company eventually expand with a larger freighter fleet.

You must wonder if there was any pressure from Transport Canada to either sell our we're going to shut you down based on the recent accidents and investigation.

That's not the way TC operates. PVI's would come with findings. Corrective Actions would be submitted. Failure to comply would result in a Notice of Suspension. TC Inspectors are not the mafia.

Wikipedia states they have 6 PC-12's, 2 Caravan's, and 3 Basler's so for only $31 million the buyer got pretty good deal. I wonder what caused the fire sale?
Perhaps the owners have realized they bought the wrong airplane. The load is small and the speed slow compared to more modern aircraft of it's size. Also apparently there is the issue of a small amount of ice causing it to fall out of the sky. This sale seems like them wiping their hands of it all.

How can you tell they own the planes? Most of the PC12's they have are long in the tooth. I flew a couple in the 1990's and at one point that plane was the highest time pc12 in the world. Later
Pilatus took it to the factory to inspect it because it was the 1st PC12 to hit 15000 hrs.

Frank doesn't give any away!!!

The repercussions will not be "down the road". They will be immediate. This is not about Cargo North's way of operating, this is simply about Northwest Co looking at controlling their costs and making more money by profiting by the air transport area of their operation. By monopolizing the grocery market, they can monopolize the air division.

$14 million in cargo will immediately be shifted away from Calm Air. Writing is on the wall for all other carriers.

In Ontario a lot of the fly-in communities with Northern stores are also Wasaya ownership communities. They are just going to make them keep using Wasaya or they will ban North Star from the community and the store will be forced to close. The band will just open their own store then.
Don't know about Manitoba though. I don't think Calm Air is going to have such community support.
