Ryanair screws up pilot leave requirements, and cancels hundreds of flights

Post by photofly »

I don't think this has reached the AvCanada peanut gallery yet.

http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-41305935

I understand the frustration but surely one's irritation at the airline has to be tempered by the knowledge that the airfare for the romantic trip away cost about $32, return?

The budget airline plans to cancel 40-50 flights every day for the next six weeks, after it admitted it had "messed up" the planning of pilot holidays.

An internal memo seen by the BBC suggests the pilot shortage could continue until the end of the year.
Is this the shortage that everybody's been watching for?

Absolutely. The letters department at the Beeb knows me as "Shocked and Dismayed, of Little Dunnington". You really have to keep your eye on these types.

They are now facing the full force of a pilot shortage. Lots of pilots have left for "real" airlines, . Ryanair spun this with well making it look not as it seems.

Maybe now when you pay 32k EUR for a typerating they'll actually guarantee you a job :?:

Maybe now they'll treat their employees as actual employees instead of contractors that are obligated to use Ryanair approved accountants as they are the only ones who fully understand their creative "avoid social security payment"-schemes

Interesting times....

What I saw on the news was that a EU judge recently ruled that pilots at bases in places other than Ireland are subject to the labour laws of the country the base is in, not Irish labour laws. Hence the discrepancy.

OK. I guess I can accept that answer.
My company screws up everyone's vacation too and we are all based in the same country under the same laws.

Speaking of BBC, not sure if anyone has seen "Come Fly With Me" http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00dgnnx

Passenger: "Because of you lot going on strike you've ruined our holiday!"
Airline Employee, Taaj: "No boss! You ruined your holiday"
Passenger: "How do you figure that one?"
Taaj: "Cause you were a cheapskate and booked with a crap airline!"

"Come Fly With Me" is a superbly done parody of the world of aviation.

Unfortunately poor ratings caused the BBC to cancel the series after only about six episodes.

There are a few outtakes from various episodes on youtube.com be sure to add BBC to the "Come Fly With Me" in the search window.

Here's a sample

Found the six full episodes posted on various streaming sites and have watched a few. Quite enjoying them!

I just listened to cbc radio and there was a former Ryan air pilot stating this isn't about mis planning vacation but a pilot shortage, 700 leaving in the last few month. Crappy conditions due to no real CBA being the main reason. Interesting times ahead.

I don't know if maximum hours are based on a Calendar Year or a 12 month rolling average.

I suspect it's the former at Ryanair and most Pilots have used up their hours and basically can't fly again until Jan 01.

I read a report about difficulties caused by the Irish regulator changing the hour accounting year from April-March to January-December (to match other EASA countries) although several years notice had been given.

Does that make any sense?
