Drones to monitor carpool lanes in Ontario

#1 Post by pelmet » Tue Dec 19, 2017 5:22 am

Better not drive alone into the carpool lane anymore....

"Canada’s leader in drone technology and unmanned aerial systems (UAS), The Sky Guys, has teamed up with Nvidia, IBM and the University of Toronto (UT) to work on a government-funded project that will trial the use of drones to monitor Ontario’s carpool lanes."

Just means more trips to Pearson with my blow up doll in the right seat. I am fine with that.

I guess the old camera-on-a-pole solution isn't expensive enough, so they needed something more complicated. Plus I guess due to their mobility, drones are more suited to observe a lane on a highway, the location of which varies over time and is hard to predict.

Given that most car pool lanes are in major urban centres and hence underlay control zones for major airports I can see this causing some troubles.

The RX-3 uses four ducted fans for vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) and a gasoline-powered rotated engine for forward flight, with a maximum speed of 90mph (144km/h) and normal cruising speed of 56-70mph (90-112km/h), making it suitable for tracking at normal highway speeds.
Loop hole... just drive fast :D
