Sort of like how Embraer is incredibly giddy over the whole Bombardier "dumping" tariffs...

Interesting times for sure. I can see the advantage for Boeing. I'm just not sure what is in it for Embraer. I guess the risk with not doing it is that they get squeezed out of the market if Airbus seriously flogs the C-Series.

The Brazilian government have indicated they aren’t enthusiastic about any BE partnership. Probably because of their contribution$ to Embraer. It would dilute their influence at Embraer. I can’t see the benefit to Boeing by this hook up. Isn’t it a little late? Boeing could have bought into the C Series ages ago and put all of the recent nonsense into the garbage bin long ago. But, there we go.
We’ll see where this goes. Remember, the Americans are isolating themselves with Trump’s isolationist Make America Great Again policy. I don’t think the Brazilian government are impressed.

It could be a case of "partner with us, or we'll make a stink and get you sanctioned too...".

Most likely the Boeing/Embraer merger is a consolidation of power. Bombardier/Airbus vs Boeing/Embraer. Boeing's temper tantrum about the C-Series has essentially forced them into a power struggle. Boeing could probably not survive politically on the world stage if they pulled the same sort of shenanigans with Embraer as they did Bombardier.

Boeing doesn't have the technology in the market currently to compete with the C-Series. Merging with Embraer allows them to compete in the C-series capacity market and force customers into an us or them decision. It's much easier to compete against 1 player vs 3.

The last item I read concerning BE clearly stated Boeing is looking at buying Embraer. I don't recall anything about a merger, but I stand to be corrected. It IS a work in progress. But at the same time, I think it will run out of gas before it gets to any destination.
Boeing's interest appears to be in the Ejet and Military products on offer by EMB and there's more to EMB than that. I don't believe the Brasilian government will be all that cooperative, not like JT and the Big Bus crowd.
Remember, airbus bought an aircraft program not a company. So, it may seem like the same thing only it's different.
Consistently, the misconception that the E jets compete with C series is just that and nothing more. The E jet is a regional jet while the C series is not. One is scoped out, the other isn't. Besides, as a pilot, you'd prefer the C series over the motorcycle any day. You just haven't figured that out yet.

The E-Jet is nothing more than Embraer's version of the MAX. An older re-engined airframe. Boeing is just doing the old "If you can't beat them, sue them".

President Michel Temer said that under no circumstances would the country give up control of the company, which is also its primary defence contractor.

Well, there you go. Guess Boeing will have to get some massive tariffs applied to the import of the Brazilian jungle jets...
