Cursive writing.

Post by C.W.E. »

I have a note function on my smart phone that I can write notes to people with a pen.

Are there many people who do not read or write cursive?

Your 'old guy' credentials showing through again!

It's pretty much a dying/lost art nowadays, sadly. My kids (elementary/middle-schoolers) are urged to practice their typing skills in class, rather than writing.

Too bad, really; I wish that i had better penmanship, even if just for logbook entries.

I can write in cursive and read it... however there is pretty much nowhere it's ever needed. Because of that, my cursive looks essentially the same as it did when I learned it back in elementary school.

All my maintenance releases are either typed on a sticky or written in regular printing.

It's going the way of shorthand really.

penmanship, as judged by some of the logbook entries I've seen lately, has basically disappeared.

Cursive writing? That died off about a decade ago.

They still teach cursive in school. Might as well be Morse code or cuneiform for how applicable it is today.

For sending notes or making notes on my smart phone I find it so much faster and easier to do.

So if I send it to someone who has a problem reading it they can ask me to do it the modern slower way.

As to morse code I sure do not miss that, however when I did my first instrument rating ride the test started with being able to read morse code or the test was a fail before we even started the engines.

Just to show how ancient I really am when the flying part of the test was being done we had to do a lost orientation find and fly an airway and do an approach using the aural radio range.

As flying has progressed things have become easier including airplanes, a good example is starting a DC6 compared to starting a B787.

I was really surprised to find nobody learns what we called “joined up writing” any more.

They no longer teach cursive writing in school, although my daughter managed to learn it (now 20).

I usually only write cursive. No idea how other people can stand writing every character separately. It would drive me nuts.

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

Same here, it is so much easier and far far faster writing cursive.
