Looking For A Good Home For A Large Model Collection

Post by Skythings »

This is a very different request I am putting out here.

Through my work I was asked to help a friend of my boss. His friend is a 93 year widow who's husband was a passionate model builder before recently passing away. I spoke with this lady last week and offered my assistance through this community.

Her husband built over 250 1:72 scale plastic model kits. He was very skilled with no glue finger prints on the canopy's unlike any of the models that I built as a kid. They are works of art. She wants her husbands models to be displayed somewhere where they will be very appreciated. These are not for sale. I repeat - she does not want anything for these. She will donate the entire collection if we can find a worthy place for them.

There are a fair number of CAF aircraft and as you can see from other countries also. Most having a military role.

I was thinking an Air Cadet Squadron drill hall, a Flying Club, a Museum, the local airport terminal building. Maybe you have some better idea's. Please have a look at the pictures and get in touch with me if you think you know somewhere these could find a fitting place to help out my new 93 year old friend. I have more pictures.

This will be a big job and perhaps with some shipping costs if they need to travel far. They are located in Ontario and there are people available to help with packing etc.

Thank you in advance

If you have any contacts there, please let them know about it. Several museums in Ontario have already been contacted and declined or failed to even respond back. Museums have only so much display space and resources to maintain collections, so they tend to be very picky regarding subject matter.

Try Elliot Lake , Ontario airport. Their terminal has a nice collection started there in glass cases and hanging from the ceiling. Good Luck, looks impressive.

Hello Skythings, what a marvelous collection! I had sent an email to an airport operator whom I know is setting up a display of vintage aircraft. If there is interest, I will certainly do what I can to advance the effort...

Beautiful collection.

100% set on having them displayed publicly? I'm aware I'm being selfish in wanting them for myself but we have a plane in Sault Ste Marie for maintenance so would be "easy" to ship them up.

Thank you for the idea's so far.

Madd Doggy I have left a message with the Elliot Lake APM.

rookiepilot - My understanding is a family friend has already contacted most of the local Ontario museums.

TheRealMcCoy - You are correct, her first wishes are for them to be enjoyed in a public setting, but with that said, if no other options would present themselves she would likely consider your proposal. She wants them appreciated. She is worried that if she passed that they would end up in a blue bin. Please send me a PM and I will put you on the list of idea's.

That's amazing. Even if they don't have space, why not hang them all from the ceiling with fishing line? It would look amazing. You could even set them up so it looks like a massive dog fight.

You should contact a model group near your location and try o find a builder who has built models for others, and get them appraised for income tax purposes when donated to a museum.
