Complex W&B examples

Post by Skymark »

I'm working on an online Weight and Balance app and I'd like some more aircraft with complex W&B envelopes and loading to do some testing. If anyone has some info, can you please send it to me.

thanks

Weight and balance is not going to get more complex. Distance x Weight = Moment. There is no way around it. Sometimes, Distance will be a function of Weight, for odd-shaped fuel tanks but the basic principle remains...

I guess you could start adding lateral assymetries but I don't know how applicable it is to civil aviation.

By "more complex" I mean more then 4 seats and a basically square envelope. I do support lateral calculations

The only example I can think of in which a fixed wing aircraft has a lateral weight limitation would be fuel imbalance, particularly with tip tanks. A review of the W&B for a Cessna 310R with wing lockers would be getting more complex for a GA aircraft. You can also review a Beaver on floats for practical cabin loading, and then consider the Sioux Narrows STC #SA04-71, which moves the engine 9.75" forward (which is done for C of G reasons).

Things you might include that I have included on my W&B app:

Warnings for overweight stations and intermediate calculations. Ie zfw max landing etc.

Ability to set fuel station weight either directly using mass, or by volume of fuel in tanks.

Support for consumable stations. Ie deice fluid, maybe spray tanks or other stores that are dropped.

Ability to switch individual aspects of calculations from metric to us.

Ability to set complex w&b envelopes including the addition of max zfw, max landing, and any other limitations a user might have.

Support for different types of fuel when calculating fuel station weight.

Hope that helps.

Also changing aircraft moment for gear up/down configuration.

The toughest part I found in creating these apps is in making the interface intuitive enough that a user can just load it and start. Things I have found that I needed to do include:

A utility to create an example aircraft to illustrate how the overall operation of the app behaves.

Individual help files for each interface view.

Demo videos accessible from the app web page.
