Is this true about Q-300 vs Q-400?

#1 Post by Fling Wing » Mon Jul 09, 2018 12:09 pm

This article says that the Q-300 Can't fly in as bad of weather as a -400.

Maybe the 300's can't do the RNAV Y (LPV) into Penticton but the Q4's can?

That’s correct for Jazz aircraft

Correct. If they put an ILS in there it wouldn’t matter on aircraft type.

Jazz has Q300s? I thought they were the original non-Q version.

300's are random, some are Q's, some aren't. Although all I've seen have the nvs system removed (the noise canceling), the q versions still have a lot more deadening in the cabin, and the overhead bins vibrate much less than their non Q counterpart.

I'd say Q's with no NVS are 10% quieter than non Q's, which isn't that noticeable, really.

Even with an ILS the Q400 could still land with lower RVR than the 100/300

How do you tell the difference between a “normal” 300 and a Q300 anyway? I was always told that the Q’s have the taxi light on the nose gear like the 400 instead of up in the nose. Anything else?

Noise and vibration suppression system, the Q stands for quiet. At least that's the marketing answer. I'm sure there's many other small variations.

I don’t think so. An ILS would likely only go down to 400-500 feet and 1 mile if they could even get it approved for Penticton. As it is the MAP on the LPV needs a 400+ft/nm climb gradient.

A bit of a misleading statement.

This would be be due to the Q400 being able to fly a higher missed approach climb gradient. This allows for lower minima combined with lower vis requirements.

At airports with terrain there are usually several published minima depending on missed approach climb gradient.

Always fly a stable approach - it's the only stability you'll find in this business

Actually it’s due to the Q400 having a HGS (HUD)

Moot point as very few if any smaller regional airports have RVR's let alone an ILS.

And the airport would have to be certified for ops less than 2600 RVR, just cause the plane can do it doesn't mean it can be done at every airport.
