Love love the GE90's...an absolute beast. The big harmonic on start is pretty unique. The OP is almost certainly correct about what they heard, the RR don't make the same sound, totally different design. (Hint: they're shit! )
It stands to reason something capable of producing 115,000lb of thrust will make some noise and vibration on it's way to idle.
Also makes a kind of hollow whoosh at times usually on final approach(heard from the cabin only and possibly only for those in front of the engine) and an interesting sound when initially spooling up for takeoff. Can also make a nice grinding sound during initial climb but that seems to only be occasional. Price of a pair of GE-90's....about the same as a new 737. And the new version will be even larger...but put out less thrust.
The GENx is actually interesting on start as well(787) based on what I heard yesterday.
In calmer days I can usually hear Q400s taxiing at YTZ from my house in the beaches. Just a low frequency thrumming noise. Down at the beach, you can distinctly hear them go into reverse when the wind is right. I’m probably 10 kms away, easily.
